It has been shown that the relative reaction preference of the C4 thiol ester toward oxygen and nitrogen nucleophiles upon activation by proteinase depends on whether residue 1106 is aspartate or histidine (Dodds, A. W., Ren, X.-D., Willis, A. C., and Law, S. K. A. (1996) Nature 379, 177-179). To determine if the equivalent residue in the related thiol(More)
Thyroxine binding globulin (TBG) is the major carrier of the thyroid hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) in plasma. TBG is member of the serpin family of proteins although it has no proteinase inhibitory activity. In this study we show that TBG has properties typical of a metastable serpin and provide evidence that occupancy of the hormone(More)
Movement ofMimosa pudica L. pulvinules was investigated by using excised ones which were placed on a moist filter paper. The pulvinules excised in the morning opened at the addition of IAA (10−7 M to 10−4M) in the dark. The lag period for the onset of the opening was about 15 min. Na-acetate buffer (pH 4) also induced the opening of pulvinules in the dark,(More)
Upon treatment with 10−4 M IAA the membrane potential of an isolated cell from the main pulvinus, ofMimosa pudica L. depolarized by about 6 mV in 2–5 min, but later it gradually hyperpolarized by about 30 mV. The membrane potential of a motor cell in the main pulvinar tissue hyperpolarized by about 80 mV 1 hr after application of 10−4 M IAA.
(Na++K+)-ATPase proved to be present in the vegetative thalli ofBoergesenia forbesii (Harvey) Feldmann. The ATPase was extracted with Triton X-100 and partially purified by Sephadex G-150 gel filtration. The enzyme was activated with Mg2+ and further stimulated by the addition of K+ and Na+. It was observed thatp-chloromercuribenzoate(More)
It is welt known that Lalctobcicillus bifidus often shows branched forms (R. F. Norris, T. Flanders, R. M. Tomarelli, and P. Gyorgy, J. Bacteriol. 60:681, 1950; V. Sundman, K. Bjrokesten, and H. G. Gyllenberpg, J. Gen. Microbiol. 21:371, 1959), but the mnechanism underlying this phenomenon has not yet been clarified. Although it has been reported that the(More)
