One hundred two isolates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) randomly selected from across the Canadian province of Ontario were tested for their susceptibility to ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and nalidixic acid by the agar dilution method. Forty-nine percent (50 of 102) had high levels of resistance to these quinolone compounds. For the 50(More)
In 2001, Canada's National Advisory Committee on Immunization endorsed a meningococcal serogroup C conjugate vaccine, which appears to provide durable serogroup-specific immunity while reducing nasopharyngeal carriage. With reference to direct and indirect effects on case occurrence, we sought to evaluate recent trends in the incidence of invasive(More)
This study utilized the Bordetella pertussis single-copy PCR target BP3385 as a means of confirming IS481 PCR-positive reactions with cycle threshold (C(T)) values of >35. IS481 PCRs with C(T) values of >35 cycles may represent PCR conditions where there is <1 CFU of B. pertussis per PCR.
BACKGROUND The high cost of computerized physician order entry (CPOE) and physician resistance to standardized care have delayed implementation. An intranet-based order set system can provide some of CPOE's benefits and offer opportunities to acculturate physicians toward standardized care. INTRANET CLINICIAN ORDER FORMS (COF): The COF system at the Medical(More)
To evaluate group visits in the management of underinsured patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes, 120 eligible patients enrolled were randomly assigned to receive care in groups or continue usual care. Feasibility, acceptability, and concordance with American Diabetes Association standards of care (Diab Camre. 25[suppl 1]:533-549) were evaluated.(More)
Inpatient pneumococcal vaccination remains underutilized, and little data exist to guide hospital personnel in improving their performance. The authors report their experience with a stepwise program to improve vaccination assessment rates for hospitalized patients with community-acquired pneumonia. They assessed barriers to vaccination and applied a(More)
Legionella species are increasingly recognized as a cause of both healthcare- and community-acquired pneumonia (so-called “Legionnaire’s disease”). These pathogens are ubiquitous in the environment, but environmental factors in the occurrence of sporadic legionellosis remain poorly understood. We analyzed all legionellosis cases identified in the Greater(More)
Neisseria meningitidis has been relatively slow to acquire resistance to penicillin. We previously reported an increase in the incidence of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) strains with decreased susceptibility to penicillin (DSP) in Ontario. Our objectives were to evaluate trends in IMD with DSP, to identify case-level predictors of IMD with DSP, and(More)
Pediatric house staff had difficulty taking an adequate telephone history when given a complaint of cough, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. Increased time in training did not seem to improve history taking. Those responsible for pediatric training programs need to consider instructing house staff in the use of the telephone.
