Intracellular ATP has been reported either to stimulate [Jacquez, J.A. (1983) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 727, 367-378] or to inhibit [Hebert, D. N., & Carruthers, A. (1986) J. Biol. Chem. 261, 10093-10099] human erythrocyte sugar transport. This current study provides a rational explanation for these divergent findings. Protein-mediated(More)
This study reports the results of an investigation to determine to what extent the influence of membrane lipids on the human erythrocyte sugar transporter protein activity (Caruthers, A. and Melchior, D.L. (1988) Annu. Rev. Physiol. 50, 257-271) is related to lipid/protein associations in the membrane bilayer. Differential scanning calorimetry was carried(More)
The in vitro presentation to red blood cells of specific lysolipids in amounts comparable to lysolipid levels in serum is shown to markedly influence protein-mediated glucose transport. Lysolipids were introduced exogenously into cell membranes by incubating erythrocytes in buffer containing varying concentrations of lysolipid (under 3.2 microM). The(More)
-Fish skin is, in fact, its first body defense line. The general skin structure is roughly similar in all fishes. It consists of two main layers: epiderm that covers the outer surface of a fish body, and its sub-layer called hypoderm that forms the inner layer. In this research, a number of 25 healthy mature Epinephelus coioides fish, with the same size and(More)
A sensitive assay is described for accurately quantitating subnanomolar aqueous concentrations of a wide variety of amphipathic and hydrophobic biological materials. This paper extends a luciferase-luciferin method previously used to measure aqueous concentrations of anesthetics to a variety of hormones, metabolites, and membrane active agents. The assay(More)
The hydrolysis of 108 esters of norethisterone (17 alpha-ethynyl-17 beta-hydroxyestr-4-en-3-one) was studied in vitro using a rabbit liver preparation. Introduction of a double or triple bond into a straight-chain ester did not inhibit hydrolysis but a marked reduction in hydrolysis was produced on replacement of a methylene group by an oxygen atom.(More)
Four 17 beta-esters of norethisterone (17 alpha-ethynyl-17 beta-hydroxyestr-4-en-3-one), formulated both as oily solutions and aqueous suspensions, were administered intramuscularly to rabbits and free plasma levels measured for periods up to 9 weeks. For all formulations of the compounds, the disappearance of norethisterone following peak plasma levels(More)
