One-hundred-seventy-nine lepromin-negative household contacts were vaccinated with heat-killed Mycobacterium leprae, BCG, or a combination of the two. Vaccination induced lepromin positivity in 131 of these contacts. Over an 8-year follow-up period, 12 lepromin-positive contacts developed leprosy, all tuberculoid; while 2 lepromin-negative vaccinated(More)
Effect of group IIB metals on the endogenous status of metallothionein (MT) and reduced glutathione (GSH) was studied in two vital detoxifying organs namely, liver and kidney of rat. The metals were administered at non lethal levels (1/10 LD50) which were found to cause no death. Zinc showed accumulation in both liver and kidney, cadmium preferentially in(More)
In the developing brain the active neurite outgrowth during the early phase of synaptogenesis is associated with a thyroid hormone dependent expression of tubulin and actin. In this study, the molecular mechanism of thyroid hormone (TH) action on actin and tubulin gene expression in the developing rat brain has been investigated by comparing the steady(More)
The effect of triiodothyronine on the biogenesis of tubulin has been studied in the developing rat brain. In organ cultures of brains from newborn rats, the hormone stimulates the incorporation of [14C]leucine into tubulin by 60-80% within 2 h in the absence of any significant change in total protein synthesis. This stimulation is strictly age-dependent(More)
The relative sensitivity of the two isotypes of actin mRNA (beta and gamma) to thyroid hormone (T3) was examined by comparing the steady state levels of these mRNAs with their rates of transcription in cerebra from normal and hypothyroid rats of different ages, covering the period of synaptogenesis (days 1-20 postnatal). Hypothyroidism was associated with a(More)
The present report, which describes management of lepromin-negative borderline leprosy patients with low-dose Convit vaccine, is an extension of our earlier study on the treatment of lepromatous leprosy patients with low-dose Convit vaccine as an adjunct to multidrug therapy (MDT). The test Group I, consisting of 50 lepromin-negative, borderline leprosy(More)
Analysis of the accident records of an aluminium smelting industry, covering about 2,100 employees, over a period of three years, showed a total of 465 accidents of male employees. Out of these, 5 were fatal, 40.86% were from contacts with extreme temperatures, causing burn injury to 42.58%. Hot materials were the agents causing 44.52% of the burn injuries.(More)
The relative effects of triiodothyronine (T3) on the synthesis and turnover of tubulin in the developing rat and chick brain have been examined. Measurements of rates of turnover of radiolabeled tubulin in the hormone-sensitive tissues show that the half-life of tubulin turnover is 4-6 h in the absence of T3 and 10-12 h in the presence of the hormone.(More)
Acute pancreatitis due to hypercalcemia associated with hyperparathyroidism (HPT) is not very common. We herein report a case of a 21-year-old woman, who presented with acute pancreatitis. She had a past history of recurrent nephrolithiasis. Subsequent evaluation revealed hypercalcemia (serum calcium: 12.6 mg/dL); low phosphate (2.9 mg/dL) with elevated(More)
