Carotenoids in Algae: Distributions, Biosyntheses and Functions
In this review, the relationship between the distribution of carotenoids and the phylogeny of oxygenic phototrophs in sea and fresh water, including cyanobacteria, red algae, brown algae and green algae, is summarized. Expand
Roseiflexus castenholzii gen. nov., sp. nov., a thermophilic, filamentous, photosynthetic bacterium that lacks chlorosomes.
A novel thermophilic, photosynthetic bacterium, designated strain HLO8T, was isolated from a bacterial mat in a Japanese hot spring and suggested that it belonged to the anoxygenic filamentous phototrophic bacteria represented by Chloroflexus aurantiacus, but was clearly distant from all members in this group. Expand
Identification of a gene required for cis-to-trans carotene isomerization in carotenogenesis of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803.
It is demonstrated that this gene, designated crtH, is involved in the isomerization of cis-carotenes to all-trans forms in dark conditions, and that cis- carotenes were also converted to all -trans forms under light conditions by photoisomerization. Expand
Genomic Structure of an Economically Important Cyanobacterium, Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis NIES-39
Almost the complete genome of A. platensis NIES-39 was determined and unique features in the gene composition were noted, particularly in a large number of genes for adenylate cyclase and haemolysin-like Ca2+-binding proteins and in chemotaxis proteins. Expand
Roseateles depolymerans gen. nov., sp. nov., a new bacteriochlorophyll a-containing obligate aerobe belonging to the beta-subclass of the Proteobacteria.
Genetic and phenotypic features suggest that the strains represent a new genus in the beta-subclass which is evenly distant from known genera, and the name Roseateles depolymerans gen. nov., sp. Expand
Rare carotenoids, (3R)-saproxanthin and (3R,2′S)-myxol, isolated from novel marine bacteria (Flavobacteriaceae) and their antioxidative activities
Saproxanthin and myxol, which are monocyclic carotenoids rarely found in nature, demonstrated significant antioxidative activities against lipid peroxidation in the rat brain homogenate model and a neuro-protective effect from l-glutamate toxicity. Expand
Phylogeny and photosynthetic features of Thiobacillus acidophilus and related acidophilic bacteria: its transfer to the genus Acidiphilium as Acidiphilium acidophilum comb. nov.
It is proposed to reclassify T. acidophilus (Guay and Silver) Harrison 1983 as Acidiphilium acidophilum comb, a group of strictly aerobic, heterotrophic acidophiles now categorized into aerobic photosynthetic bacteria. Expand
Distribution and Biosynthesis of Carotenoids
Purple bacteria including aerobic photosynthetic bacteria belong to the Proteobacteria, and 75 genera including around 160 species have been described. These bacteria produce around 100 differentExpand
Porphyrobacter tepidarius sp. nov., a moderately thermophilic aerobic photosynthetic bacterium isolated from a hot spring.
The results of phenotypic and genetic comparisons suggest that the new isolate is closely related to P. neustonensis, which is a thermophilic bacterium with an optimal growth temperature of 40 to 48 degrees C. Expand
Carotenoids and carotenogenesis in cyanobacteria: unique ketocarotenoids and carotenoid glycosides
The carotenoid glycosides, myxol glycoside and oscillol diglycoside compositions among cyanobacteria, including the unique ketocarotenoids, echinenone and 4-ketomyxol, are discussed, and certainCarotenogenesis pathways can be proposed. Expand
