Mutational spectrum of NSDHL in CHILD syndrome
- D. Bornholdt, A. König, K. Grzeschik
- MedicineJournal of Medical Genetics
- 1 February 2005
A diagnosis can be established not only in classical cases but also in cases with minimal or atypical involvement of the CHILD syndrome, which is an X linked dominant, male lethal, multisystem birth defect characterised by an inflammatory epidermal nevus showing a unique lateralisation pattern and strict midline demarcation.
Steroid sulfatase in the human hair follicle concentrates in the dermal papilla.
- R. Hoffmann, A. Rot, S. Niiyama, A. Billich
- Biology, MedicineJournal of Investigative Dermatology
- 1 December 2001
It is shown that dermal papillae are able to utilize dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate to produce 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone, which lends further support to the hypothesis that dehydroEPiandro Steroids sulfate contributes to androgenetic alopecia and that steroid sulfatase inhibitors could be novel drugs to treat androgen-dependent disorders of the hair follicle such as hirsutism.

Multiple eruptive dermatofibromas: a review of the literature.
- S. Niiyama, K. Katsuoka, R. Happle, R. Hoffmann
- MedicineActa Dermato-Venereologica
- 2002
Because more than half of the patients with multiple eruptive dermatofibromas have underlying diseases, and more than 80% of the underlying diseases are immune-mediated, multiple eruptives could possiblv be considered as a partial manifestation of an immune- mediated disease.
Nestin‐positive hair follicle pluripotent stem cells can promote regeneration of impinged peripheral nerve injury
- Y. Amoh, R. Aki, K. Katsuoka
- BiologyJournal of dermatology (Print)
- 1 January 2012
These multipotent hair follicle stem cells thereby provide a potential accessible, autologous source of stem cells for regeneration therapy of nerves degenerated by compression between bony or other hard surfaces.
Dietary soy oil content and soy‐derived phytoestrogen genistein increase resistance to alopecia areata onset in C3H/HeJ mice
- K. McElwee, S. Niiyama, R. Hoffmann
- BiologyExperimental Dermatology
- 1 February 2003
Dairy soy (soya) oil content and the soy‐derived phytoestrogen genistein as potential modifying agents for C3H/HeJ mouse AA were considered and no significant association was observed between the extent of hair loss and diet orgenistein injection.
Influence of estrogens on the androgen metabolism in different subunits of human hair follicles.
- S. Niiyama, R. Happle, R. Hoffmann
- BiologyEJD. European journal of dermatology
- 18 May 2001
Whether E directly inhibits 5alpha-R in DP's or whether the effect of estrogens might be explained by an increased conversion of T to the weaker androgens such as androstendione, androstenediol or 17beta-E (via aromatase), thereby diminishing the amount of T available for the conversion to DHT, remains to be shown.
Acrodermatitis acidemica secondary to malnutrition in glutaric aciduria type I.
- S. Niiyama, S. Koelker, I. Degen, G. Hoffmann, R. Happle, R. Hoffmann
- MedicineEJD. European journal of dermatology
- 18 May 2001
We encountered a patient with glutaric aciduria type I (GA-I) associated with skin lesions resembling acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE). This child was being fed with a low-protein diet when the skin…
