Effects of Basella alba and Hibiscus macranthus extracts on testosterone production of adult rat and bull Leydig cells.

Lydig cells purified from bull testes can be used as an alternative tool in experimental animal research and certain fractions of Basella alba extract demonstrated androgenic potential whereas Hibiscus macranthus extracts did not.

All the compounds were found to be active against the Plasmodium parasites with bazouanthrone showing particular potency (IC50=1.80 microM), and the structure of the compound was assigned as 3,5,8,9-tetrahydroxy-2,4,4-tri-(3,3-dimethylallyl)-6-methyl-1-(4H)-anthracenone.

Spathoside, a new cerebroside was isolated from the stem bark of Spathodea campanulata, besides known compounds and inhibited significantly the growth of some gram-positive and -negative bacteria.
