Effects of Basella alba and Hibiscus macranthus extracts on testosterone production of adult rat and bull Leydig cells.

The extracts and the isolated compounds were tested in vitro for their anti-plasmodial activity against Plasmodium falciparum (chloroquine resistant strain W2) and for their acetyl- and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory properties.

All the compounds were found to be active against the Plasmodium parasites with bazouanthrone showing particular potency (IC50=1.80 microM), and the structure of the compound was assigned as 3,5,8,9-tetrahydroxy-2,4,4-tri-(3,3-dimethylallyl)-6-methyl-1-(4H)-anthracenone.

Spathoside, a new cerebroside was isolated from the stem bark of Spathodea campanulata, besides known compounds and inhibited significantly the growth of some gram-positive and -negative bacteria.

It's concluded that Mondia whitei had sexual enhancement of the sexually inexperienced male rat and was found to be more efficient than the aqueous extract.
