Evaluation of the antioxidant potential of natural products.
Of these substances, the hydroxystilbenes piceatannol and transresveratrol have thus far been shown to inhibit carcinogen-induced preneoplastic lesion formation in the mouse mammary gland organ culture model. Expand
Delta neutrophil index as an early marker of disease severity in critically ill patients with sepsis
DNI values were already elevated up to 12 hours before the onset of organ/circulatory failure and may help to identify patients with an impending risk of developing severe sepsis/septic shock. Expand
Evaluation of natural products on inhibition of inducible cyclooxygenase (COX-2) and nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in cultured mouse macrophage cells.
These active extracts mediating COX-2 and iNOS inhibitory activities are warranted for further elucidation of active principles for development of new cancer chemopreventive and/or anti-inflammatory agents. Expand
Inhibitory mechanism of aloe single component (alprogen) on mediator release in guinea pig lung mast cells activated with specific antigen-antibody reactions.
The data suggest that alprogen purified from aloe inhibits multiple signals as well as blocking Ca(2+) influx caused by mast cells activated with specific antigen-antibody reactions and that then the inhibition of histamine and leukotriene release follows. Expand
Suppression of lipopolysaccharide-induced expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase by brazilin in RAW 264.7 macrophage cells.
The findings suggest that the suppressive effect of iNOS gene expression by brazilin might provide one possible mechanism for its anti-inflammatory and cancer chemopreventive activity. Expand
Xanthorrhizol inhibits 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate-induced acute inflammation and two-stage mouse skin carcinogenesis by blocking the expression of ornithine decarboxylase, cyclooxygenase-2
It is demonstrated that xanthorrhizol not only delays or inhibits tumor formation, but also reverses the carcinogenic process at pre-malignant stages by reducing the protein levels of ODC, iNOS and COX-2 regulated by the NF-kappaB, mitogen-activated protein kinases and/or Akt. Expand

A new naphthoquinone was isolated from the bulb of Eleutherine americana MERR together with two known compounds, eleutherinol and 1,5-dihydroxy-3-methylanthraquinone which were found in this species for the first time. Expand
Cytostatic mechanism and antitumor potential of novel 1H-cyclopenta[b]benzofuran lignans isolated from Aglaia elliptica.
Novel 1H-cyclopenta[b]benzofuran lignans are potent cytostatic inhibitors of protein biosynthesis and are capable of delaying tumor growth in an in vivo model and their full clinical or basic utility requires further investigation. Expand
Natural inhibitors of carcinogenesis.
Based on this large pool of potential cancer chemopreventive compounds, structure-activity relationships are discussed in terms of the quinone reductase induction ability of flavonoids and withanolides and the cyclooxygenase-1 and -2 inhibitory activities of flavanones, flavones and stilbenoids. Expand
Cytotoxic and antineoplastic activity of timosaponin A-III for human colon cancer cells.
Treatment with compound 1 for four weeks significantly suppressed tumor growth in athymic nude mice bearing HCT-15 cells, without any overt toxicity. Expand
