- T. Nakajima, B. Oppenheimer, S. Kulkarni, D. Golimowski, K. Matthews, S. Durrance
- Physics, GeologyNature
- 30 November 1995
The discovery of a probable companion to the nearby star G1229, with no more than onetenth the luminosity of the least luminous hydro-gen-burning star, is reported, concluding that the companion is a brown dwarf with a temperature of less than 1,200 K, and a mass ∼20–50 times that of Jupiter.
Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of Venus and Mars at 4 Å Resolution with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope on Astro-2
- P. Feldman, E. Burgh, S. Durrance, A. Davidsen
- Physics
- 3 April 2000
Far-ultraviolet spectra of Venus and Mars in the range 820-1840 Å at ~4 Å resolution were obtained on 1995 March 13 and 12, respectively, by the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope (HUT), which was part of…
Hopkins ultraviolet telescope observations of the far-ultraviolet spectrum of NGC 4151
- G. Kriss, A. Davidsen, O. Vancura
- Physics
- 20 June 1992
Observations of the FUV spectrum of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 from 912 to 1860 A during the flight of Astro-1 aboard the space shuttle Columbia in December 1990 are reported. Broad emission lines…
A Coronagraphic Survey for Companions of Stars within 8 Parsecs
- B. Oppenheimer, D. Golimowski, S. Durrance
- Physics, Geology
- 18 January 2001
We present the technique and results of a survey of stars within 8 pc of the Sun with declinations δ > -35° (J2000.00). The survey, designed to find without color bias faint companions, consists of…
Discovery of a fast radiative shock wave in the Cygnus Loop using the Hopkins ultraviolet telescope
Observations of the far-ultraviolet spectrum of a bright radiative filament on the eastern edge of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant are described which were made through the Hopkins Ultraviolet…
Rocket detection of ultraviolet emission from neutral oxygen and sulfur in the IO Torus

The spectrum of the Jovian dayglow observed at 3 A resolution with the Hopkins ultraviolet telescope
- P. Feldman, M. McGrath, H. Moos, S. Durrance, D. Strobel, A. Davidsen
- Physics
- 20 March 1993
Ultraviolet spectra of the Jovian equatorial dayglow in the spectral range 830-1850 A were obtained at about 3 A resolution. The observed spectrum is dominated by electron impact excitation of the H2…
Performance and Preliminary Calibration of the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope on the Astro-2 Mission
- J. Kruk, S. Durrance, D. Finley
- Physics
- 20 November 1995
An improved version of the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope (HUT) made its second flight on the Astro-2 mission aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour from 1995 March 2-18. The longer mission duration and…
Far-ultraviolet observations of the supernova remnant N49 using the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope
- O. Vancura, W. Blair, H. Moos
- Physics
- 10 December 1992
The Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope has been used to obtain the first sub-Lyman-alpha spectrum of an extragalactic SNR, N49, in the LMC. Emission from O VI 1032, 1038 has been detected in this spectral…
Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope Determination of the Io Torus Electron Temperature
- D. Hall, C. Bednar, D. Strobel
- Physics
- 1994
Sulfur ion emissions from the Io plasma torus observed by the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope (HUT) in 1990 December have been analyzed to determine the effective temperature of the exciting electrons.…
