In most populations studied, birth weight was inversely related to type 2 diabetes risk, and the shape of the birth weight-type 2 diabetes association was strongly graded, particularly at birth weights of 3 kg or less.

Low birth weight is associated with type 2 diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, and impaired fasting glucose in men, and this finding was most pronounced in subjects with diabetes in the family, but it was also indicated in those without a family history of diabetes.
