The main novelties of the Lorel language are the extensive use of coercion to relieve the user from the strict typing of OQL, which is inappropriate for semistructured data; and powerful path expressions, which permit a flexible form of declarative navigational access and are particularly suitable when the details of the structure are not known to the user.

The complexity of the problem of answering queries using materialized views is studied and it is shown that the complexity depends on whether views are assumed to store all the tuples that satisfy the view definition, or only a subset of it.

This work is motivated by the support for change control in the context of the Xyleme project that is investigating dynamic warehouses capable of storing massive volumes of XML data, and offers a diff algorithm for XML data that runs in average in linear time vs. quadratic time.

An object-based data model, whose structural part generalizes most of the known complex-object data models: cyclicity is allowed in both its schemas and instances and the model can be extended to incorporate type inheritance without changes to IQL.

The approach is algebraic but the authors' bounds also apply to logical databases, and it is shown that the approach is, in a sense, the best possible, by deriving two NP-completeness lower bounds for the bounded possible fact problem when the fixed query contains either negation or recursion.
Adaptive on-line page importance computation
A new algorithm OPIC is introduced that works on-line, and uses much less resources, and does not require storing the link matrix, and is used to focus crawling to the most interesting pages.
