Digital modulation techniques that enable high-speed transmission over multimode optical fibers made of silica as well as polymer are discussed. Multilevel modulation provides the potential for high speed short-reach transmission even with low bandwidth components.
10 Gbit/s Transmission over up to 300 m of multimode 62.5 μm core-diameter perfluorinated graded-index polymer optical fiber is compared using on-off-keying (OOK) or 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) and feed-forward or decision-feedback equalization.
Real-time Gigabit Ethernet transmission over up to 25 m Step-Index Polymer Optical Fibre is demonstrated using a commercial LED. This is enabled by use of PAM-4 modulation and receiver equalisation including clock recovery, implemented in an FPGA.
