Alternative reproductive tactics : an integrative approach
The evolution of alternative mating tactics: concepts and questions Michael Taborsky, Rui F. Oliveira and H. Jane Brockmann examine the role of genes and the environment in the expression and evolution ofAlternative reproductive tactics.
The evolution of alternative reproductive tactics: concepts and questions
The meaning of the term alternative reproductive tactics, or ARTs, is outlined, and why the existence of ARTs is so widespread in animals is discussed, and the importance of general principles such as frequency dependence, density dependence, and condition dependence is asked.
Social behavior in context: Hormonal modulation of behavioral plasticity and social competence.
- Rui F. Oliveira
- Psychology, BiologyIntegrative and Comparative Biology
- 1 October 2009
A reciprocal model for the action of androgens on short-term behavioral plasticity is proposed and a set of studies conducted in the laboratory using an African cichlid fish that provide support for it are reviewed.

It is shown that male Betta splendens monitor aggressive interactions between neighbouring conspecifics and use the information on relative fighting ability in subsequent aggressive interactions with the males they have observed, one aspect of which has been termed eavesdropping.
Hormonal mechanisms of cooperative behaviour

The aim here is to focus on the potential role of neuroendocrine mechanisms on the regulation of the expression of cooperative behaviour in vertebrates and to evaluate how hormones may influence known cognitive modules that are involved in decision-making processes that may lead to cooperative behaviour.
