Macrophages express high levels of the myristoylated, alanine-rich, C kinase substrate (MARCKS), an actin cross-linking protein. To investigate a possible role of MARCKS in macrophage function, fetal liver-derived macrophages were generated from wild-type and MARCKS knockout mouse embryos. No differences between the wild-type and MARCKS-deficient(More)
BACKGROUND Myocardial infarction with normal coronary arteries (MINCA) is a well-documented syndrome often associated with global left ventricular wall motion abnormalities (LVWMAs). Recent literature has emphasized the occurrence of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy associated with MINCA. What has not been reported is the incidence of MINCA in the general(More)
We examined the initial molecular mechanisms by which cells nonselectively internalize extracellular solutes in response to insulin. Insulin-stimulated fluid phase endocytosis (FPE) was examined in responsive cells, and the roles of the insulin receptor, insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1), phosphatidylinositol 3'-kinase (PI 3'-kinase), Ras, and(More)
When surgeons consider ventricular assist devices (VADs) for post-cardiotomy support, unnecessary delays and early use can have detrimental effects on patient outcome. The authors analyzed the timing of intraoperative events in all patients receiving post-cardiotomy VAD support at their institution during a 2-1/2 year period (N = 17). They used ability to(More)
UNLABELLED While debulking with rotational atherectomy (RA) prior to balloon angioplasty (BA) improves acute results by reducing elastic recoil, treatment of an ostial side branch lesion that is covered (jailed) by a stent represents a particular challenge. We report our experience with RA in conjunction with BA for the treatment of ostial stenosis in(More)
We evaluated a combination therapy using glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor antagonism and direct thrombin inhibition in nine patients with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) undergoing 10 percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs). In selected patients with HIT, the combination of a direct thrombin inhibitor, lepirudin, and abciximab, tirofiban, or(More)
We report the time course to the restoration of normal platelet aggregation in three patients who were treated with eptifibatide in the setting of severe renal failure. There was prolonged platelet inhibition in the first patient who developed acute renal failure. The second patient with acute on chronic renal failure developed an intracerebral hemorrhage.(More)

In this reply to Jane Mansbridge’s “Clarifying the Concept of Representation” in this issue (American Political Science Review 2011). I argue that our main disagreements are conceptual, and are traceable to the attempt to treat the concept of representation as a “single highly complex concept” as Hanna Pitkin once put it. Instead, I argue, it would be more(More)
The apical variant of nonobstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) constitutes a minority of all cases of HCM and generally carries a favorable clinical outcome. We describe a 68 year-old Caucasian woman who presented with exertional dyspnea. The patient underwent stress testing with electrocardiogram-gated single-photon emission computed tomography(More)
The constitutive release of NO by the endothelium plays a key role in maintaining normal low basal pulmonary vascular tone and countering hypoxic vasoconstrictive tone in many mammals and in humans. Many, but not all, studies have suggested that reduced availability of NO contributes to the increased pulmonary vascular resistance that occurs in experimental(More)
