This review summarizes physiology of circulating and local renin-angiotensin system (RAS), enzymatic properties and mechanism of action of angiotensin I converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) on RAS, and implications of ACEIs in anesthetic management of patients treated with these drugs. ACEIs, through their effect on RAS, may improve cardiovascular(More)
Two research groups in both North and South America independently discovered that renin released a novel vasopressor agent. The Argentine group named it hypertensin, and called its plasma protein substrate hypertensinogen. The group from the United States named it angiotonin. In 1958, Braun Menendez and Irvine Page suggested that the peptide should be named(More)
This review summarizes some basic properties and distribution of angiotensin I converting enzyme (ACE). ACE is one of several biologically important ectoproteins that exists in both membrane-bound and soluble forms. Localized on the surface of various cells, ACE is inserted at the cell membrane via its carboxyl terminus. Human plasma ACE originates from(More)
Aluminium may have an important role in the aetiology/pathogenesis/precipitation of Alzheimer's disease. Because green tea (Camellia sinensis L.) reportedly has health-promoting effects in the central nervous system, we evaluated the effects of green tea leaf extract (GTLE) on aluminium chloride (AlCl3 ) neurotoxicity in rats. All solutions were injected(More)
In this study we demonstrate that carboxypeptidase A (CPA)-like enzyme is expressed in rat kidney. The major metabolites of angiotensin (Ang) I by the rat renal mesangial cell extract at 37 degrees C, pH 7.4, were Ang 1-9 and Ang II. Quinaprilat did not influence the formation of Ang 1-9, but it inhibited formation of Ang II. The formation of Ang 1-9 was(More)
Rats were adrenalectomized and injected for 7 days with dexamethasone (DEX) or deoxycorticosterone. Kallikrein and prekallikrein were assayed in urine and in a basolateral membrane-enriched fraction. The activities of renin and phospholipase A2 were also determined in the fraction. Adrenalectomy significantly decreased active kallikrein in urine.(More)
