An analysis of 69 edentulous patients with severe atrophy of the mandible and submitted to ridge augmentation, together with 57 normal edentulous patients, revealed in about half of the patients with a severe atrophy radiological evidence of metabolic bone loss. In the group of normal edentulous patients, this was only found in post-menopausal women.
In seven patients with an onlay of hydroxylapatite granules on the severely resorbed mandible the results are reported after four years. Radiographic evaluation showed some loss (a median loss of 7%) of height of the onlay in five of the seven patients. The granules in the upper part of the onlay proved to be smaller, probably as a result of fragmentation.(More)
