The results showed that risk may be underestimated if the contributions of gas-phase PAHs are not considered, and the estimated risk was higher than values recommended by the World Health Organization and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency but lower than the threshold value of 10–3 that is considered an indication of definite risk according to similar risk studies.

A method was developed to determine 11 pharmaceutical compounds in water samples and several pharmaceuticals were found in the influent and effluent sewage waters to be determined in five campaigns carried out between February 2004 and June 2005.

The method proved to be sensitive—a 50-mL sample was used to determine these compounds in environmental waters at trace levels and concentrations of benzophenone-3 and triclosan were commonly below 25 ng L−1 in effluent sewage.
