Catalysis by hen egg-white lysozyme proceeds via a covalent intermediate
A general catalytic mechanism for all retaining β-glycosidases that includes substrate distortion, formation of a covalent intermediate, and the electrophilic migration of C1 along the reaction coordinate is formulated.
A calculation of all possible oligosaccharide isomers both branched and linear yields 1.05 x 10(12) structures for a reducing hexasaccharide: the Isomer Barrier to development of single-method…
- R. Laine
The number of all possible linear and branched isomers of a hexasaccharide was calculated and found to be > 1.05 x 10(12), a persistent technological barrier to the development of a single analytical method for the absolute characterization of carbohydrates, regardless of sample quantity.
Eicosapentaenoic and Arachidonic Acids from Phytophthora infestans Elicit Fungitoxic Sesquiterpenes in the Potato.
The most active elicitors of stress metabolites in these extracts were eicosapentaenoic and arachidonic acids, which were found in either free or esterified form in all active fractions of the mycelial extracts.

The number of all possible linear and branched isomers of a hexasaccharide was calculated and found to be > 1.05 x 10(12). This large number defines the Isomer Barrier, a persistent technological…
Formosan Subterranean Termite (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) Soldiers Regulate Juvenile Hormone Levels and Caste Differentiation in Workers
It is demonstrated that the soldier caste regulates JH in workers of Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, providing evidence that soldier caste proportions regulate JH levels and thereby caste differentiation in workers.
Nootkatone Is a Repellent for Formosan Subterranean Termite (Coptotermes formosanus)

Nootkatone, a sesquiterpene ketone, isolated from vetiver oil is a strong repellent and toxicant to Formosan subterranean termites.
Seasonal Variation of Juvenile Hormone Titers of the Formosan Subterranean Termite, Coptotermes formosanus (Rhinotermitidae)
This is the first effort to correlate physiological and hormonal aspects with soldier production in the field and seasonal changes in JH titers as an intrinsic mechanism for reproductive caste differentiation is discussed.
Termites fumigate their nests with naphthalene
The hydrocarbon naphthalene has been found naturally associated with any insect species for the first time, in extracts of the nest material produced by Formosan subterranean termites.
In vitro cytocidal effect of novel lytic peptides on Plasmodium falciparum and Trypanosoma cruzi 1

In view of the worldwide prevalence of these protozoan diseases and the lack of completely suitable treatments, lytic peptides may provide new and unique chemother‐apeutic agents for the treatment of these infections.
Carbohydrate structures of three novel phosphoinositol-containing sphingolipids from the yeast Histoplasma capsulatum.
From the yeast phase of the human pathogen Histoplasma capsulatum, three novel glycolipids were isolated, shown to react with sera from histoplasmosis patients, and partially characterized, and it is noteworthy that compound VI is immunoreactive.
