Laser cooling below the one-photon recoil energy by velocity-selective coherent population trapping: theoretical analysis
- A. Aspect, E. Arimondo, R. Kaiser, N. Vansteenkiste, C. cohen-tannoudji
- Physics

We present a theoretical analysis of a new one-dimensional laser-cooling scheme that was recently demonstrated on a beam of metastable 4He atoms. Both internal and translational degrees of freedom…

Raman scattering and superconductivity of titanium nitride with various N deficiencies have been investigated. While in stoichiometric superconducting TiN second-order Raman scattering is…
Photon localization and Dicke superradiance in atomic gases.
- E. Akkermans, A. Gero, R. Kaiser
- PhysicsPhysical Review Letters
- 5 June 2008
Photon propagation in a gas of N atoms is studied using an effective Hamiltonian describing photon-mediated atomic dipolar interactions. The density P(Gamma) of photon escape rates is determined from…
Coherence and polarization of light propagating through scattering media and biological tissues.

Depolarization began to appear for polystyrene microspheres for thicknesses larger than 23, 19, and 15 scattering mean free paths (SMFP's), respectively, where the coherently detected scattered component dominates the ballistic component.
Cooperative effects and disorder: A scaling analysis of the spectrum of the effective atomic Hamiltonian

We study numerically the spectrum of the non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonian that describes the dipolar interaction of a gas of $N\gg 1$ atoms with the radiation field. We analyze the interplay…
Subradiance in a Large Cloud of Cold Atoms.
- W. Guerin, M. O. Araújo, R. Kaiser
- PhysicsPhysical Review Letters
- 1 September 2015
This work reports the experimental observation of subradiance in an extended and dilute cold-atom sample containing a large number of particles, and detects a very slow decay, with time constants as long as 100 times the natural lifetime of the excited state of individual atoms.
Optomechanical self-structuring in a cold atomic gas

- Physics
- 1 April 2014
A simple experiment enables simultaneous long-range spatial structuring of a cold atomic cloud and an optical pump field, with an adjustable length scale.
Controlled Dicke subradiance from a large cloud of two-level systems.
- T. Bienaimé, N. Piovella, R. Kaiser
- PhysicsPhysical Review Letters
- 11 January 2012
It is shown that a dilute cloud of cold atoms is an ideal system to look for subradiant states in free space and study various mechanisms to control this subradiance.
