Extinction debt on oceanic islands
- K. Triantis, P. Borges, R. Whittaker
- Environmental Science
- 1 April 2010
Habitat destruction is the leading cause of species extinctions. However, there is typically a time-lag between the reduction in habitat area and the eventual disappearance of the remnant…
Comparison of Bacterial Diversity in Azorean and Hawai'ian Lava Cave Microbial Mats
- J. Hathaway, Matthew G. Garcia, D. Northup
- Environmental ScienceGeomicrobiology Journal
- 30 January 2014
Comparisons among the extensive bacterial diversity found in lava caves in two geographically separate locations are revealed, for the first time, and contribute to the current debate on the nature of microbial biogeography.
How do different dispersal modes shape the species–area relationship? Evidence for between‐group coherence in the Macaronesian flora
- S. C. Aranda, R. Gabriel, J. Lobo
- Environmental Science
- 1 April 2013
Differences in dispersal ability influence the compositional dissimilarity between these islands, but not the rate of species increase with area, which may be because ISAR slopes are mostly determined by within-island processes of species accumulation, while differences in disperseal generate different betweenisland patterns.
Geographical, Temporal and Environmental Determinants of Bryophyte Species Richness in the Macaronesian Islands
- S. C. Aranda, R. Gabriel, J. Lobo
- Environmental SciencePLoS ONE
- 8 July 2014
The results indicate that for highly vagile taxa on oceanic islands, the dispersal process may be less important for successful colonization than the availability of suitable ecological conditions during the establishment phase.
The Azorean Biodiversity Portal: An internet database for regional biodiversity outreach
- P. Borges, R. Gabriel, P. Cardoso
- Environmental Science
- 21 December 2010
An internet database of the terrestrial lichens, bryophytes, vascular plants, molluscs, arthropods, vertebrates and coastal invertebrates of the Azores archipelago (Portugal, North Atlantic): the Azorean Biodiversity Portal (ABP), a unique resource for fundamental research in systematics, biodiversity, education and conservation management.

Bryophyte community composition and habitat specificity in the natural forests of Terceira, Azores
- R. Gabriel, J. W. Bates
- Environmental SciencePlant Ecology
- 1 March 2005
A quantitative analysis of the vegetationenvironment relationships consistently showed that the distributions of the native forest bryophytes and lichens of Terceira are governed by a complex set of factors related to water availability, the status of the substrata and the influences of the vascular plant community.
