It is concluded that disulfiram may help reduce drinking frequency after relapse, but does not enhance counseling in aiding alcoholic patients to sustain continuous abstinence or delay the resumption of drinking.

An index to assess the success of blinding with application to a clinical trial of disulfiram is considered and is scaled to an interval of 0.0 to 1.0, with 1 being complete lack of blinding and 2.0 being complete blinding.

Although older individuals drink less and report fewer alcohol-related problems than do younger individuals, alcohol use and abuse are significant health issues for older patients and discussion of alcohol consumption is a critical part of every history and physical examination.

It is found that complete abstinence correlated significantly with compliance and obtaining employment, and patients willing to take disulfiram are more likely to be abstinent if given the drug.

Overall, the Project MATCH trial detected no significant differences among the three treatments in patient outcome, although certain treatment methodologies may be most appropriate for patients with certain characteristics.
