Remote Sensing of Sargassum Biomass, Nutrients, and Pigments
- Mengqiu Wang, Chuanmin Hu, F. Hernandez
- Environmental Science, MathematicsGeophysical Research Letters
- 20 November 2018
Field and laboratory experiments are designed to measure Sargassum biomass per area (density), surface reflectance, nutrient contents, and pigment concentrations. An alternative floating algae…
Nitrogen enrichment, altered stoichiometry, and coral reef decline at Looe Key, Florida Keys, USA: a 3-decade study
- B. Lapointe, R. Brewton, L. Herren, J. Porter, Chuanmin Hu
- Environmental ScienceMarine Biology
- 15 July 2019
Improved management of water quality at the local and regional levels could moderate N inputs and maintain more balanced N:P stoichiometry, thereby reducing the risk of coral bleaching, disease, and mortality under the current level of temperature stress.
Nutrient over-enrichment and light limitation of seagrass communities in the Indian River Lagoon, an urbanized subtropical estuary.
Gene Expression and Growth as Indicators of Effects of the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill on Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus)
- R. Brewton, Richard Fulford, R. Griffitt
- Environmental ScienceJournal of toxicology and environmental health…
- 2 November 2013
The data showed that the different life stages respond differently to crude and dispersed oil, with larval spotted seatrout affected most by CEWAF, while juvenile spotted Seatrout were affected to a greater extent by HEWAF.
Macrofauna using intertidal oyster reef varies in relation to position within the estuarine habitat mosaic
- Isis E. Gain, R. Brewton, Megan M. Reese Robillard, Keith D. Johnson, D. L. Smee, G. Stunz
- Environmental Science
The results indicate the importance of intertidal oyster reefs to macrofauna and that reef location within the estuarine mosaic influences density and community assemblages.
Habitat-Specific Reproductive Potential of Red Snapper: A Comparison of Artificial and Natural Reefs in the Western Gulf of Mexico
- Charles H. Downey, Matthew K. Streich, R. Brewton, M. Ajemian, J. J. Wetz, G. Stunz
- Environmental ScienceTransactions of the American Fisheries Society
- 3 October 2018
Energy exploration in the Gulf of Mexico (hereafter, Gulf) has resulted in the addition of numerous oil and gas production platforms that create structurally complex habitat in an area otherwise…
Feeding Ecology of Dolphinfish in the Western Gulf of Mexico
A comprehensive diet study to develop new trophic baselines and investigate potential ontogenetic and sex-related shifts in Dolphinfish feeding ecology revealed a highly piscivorous diet with Actinopterygii comprising 70.44% of the stomach contents by number.
Nutrient content and stoichiometry of pelagic Sargassum reflects increasing nitrogen availability in the Atlantic Basin
It is suggested that increased N availability is supporting blooms of Sargassum and turning a critical nursery habitat into harmful algal blooms with catastrophic impacts on coastal ecosystems, economies, and human health.
Impacts of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill on the Reproductive Biology of Spotted Seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus)
