A woman with neurofibromatosis (von Recklinghausen's disease) presented with a giant plexiform neuroma of the arm and chest wall, with dysplastic scoliosis and a pseudarthrosis of the humerus. Her arm resembled that of the "Elephant Man" described by Sir Frederick Treves.
This study demonstrates the need for periodic reassessments of overall function in effective rehabilitation programs. Unilateral orthotic aids to walking may correct a malfunction on the affected side and yet inadvertently contribute to malfunction of the contralateral side if attention is focused only on the impaired joint or segment.
