1. Serotonin (5-HT) facilitates the connections between sensory and motor neurons in Aplysia during behavioural sensitization. The effect of 5-HT on sensorimotor synapses is believed to be primarily presynaptic. Here we tested whether 5-HT can have an exclusively postsynaptic facilitatory effect. 2. Siphon motor neurons were individually dissociated from(More)
Danshensu, a type of dihydroxyphenyl lactic acid, is one of the most abundant active phenolic acids in the dried root of Salvia miltiorrhizae (Lamiaceae)--widely used traditional Chinese medicine. The effects of danshensu on platelet aggregation and thrombus formation in rats were examined using various methods. It was found that danshensu significantly(More)
We report here the clinical, genetic, and molecular characterization of a four-generation Chinese family with aminoglycoside-induced and nonsyndromic hearing loss. Five of nine matrilineal relatives had aminoglycoside-induced hearing loss. These matrilineal relatives exhibited variable severity and audiometric configuration of hearing impairment, despite(More)
Temozolomide (TMZ) is the cornerstone of therapy for glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). However, its efficacy is limited due to the development of multidrug resistance (MDR). In this study, we first identified the occurrence of ER stress-tolerance (ERST) in glioma cells and confirmed that ERST was positively correlated with TMZ resistance. We further showed(More)
Segments of rat submandibular salivary gland were incubated in MEM supplemented with 10-800 microM sulphate in the presence of [3H]-glucosamine, [3H]-proline and [35S]-Na2SO4, with 0-8 mM chlorate, an inhibitor of 3'-phosphoadenosine-5'-phosphosulphate formation. Incorporation of glucosamine and sulphate depended upon the sulphate content of the medium and(More)
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS It is known that approximately 5% of congenital profound hearing impaired cases are inherited in X-linked inheritance. This study aimed at identifying its underlying molecular determinant(s) using a large, five-generation Chinese family with multiple familial cases. STUDY DESIGN Model-based linkage analysis and positional cloning. (More)
We analyze the interplay between pnicogen-bonding and halogen-bonding interactions in the XCl-FH(2)P-NH(3) (X=F, OH, CN, NC, and FCC) complex at the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level. Synergetic effects are observed when pnicogen and halogen bonds coexist in the same complex. These effects are studied in terms of geometric and energetic features of the complexes.(More)
Infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations have been applied to elucidate the hydrogen bonding interactions between water/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and a representative pyridinium-based ionic liquid, 1-butylpyridinium tetrafluoroborate ([BuPy][BF(4)]). It has been found that both solvents can interact with the BuPy(+) cation through(More)
Excess infrared (IR) absorption spectroscopy, a new concept brought forward by applying the idea of excess thermodynamic functions to infrared spectroscopy, is shown to be a potential method to study hydrogen bonds. It can be applied to enhance spectral resolution of complexed IR bands, to evaluate nonideality of liquid mixtures, and to estimate selective(More)
High levels of glucocorticoids (GCs) have been reported to damage normal hippocampal neurons, and such damage has been positively correlated with major depression (MD) and chronic stress. Our previous study showed that HDAC6 might be a potential target to regulate GC-induced glucocorticoid receptor (GR) translocation to the mitochondria and subsequent(More)
