Duration-sensitive neurons in the inferior colliculus of horseshoe bats: adaptations for using CF-FM echolocation pulses.
- Feng Luo, W. Metzner, Feijian Wu, Shuyi Zhang, Qicai Chen
- BiologyJournal of Neurophysiology
- 2008
Presentation of a CF-FM stimulus improved the duration sensitivity in IC neurons by increasing the ratio of duration-tuned neurons and making them less susceptible to changes in signal intensity.

Bilateral Collicular Interaction: Modulation of Auditory Signal Processing in Amplitude Domain
- Huixian Mei, Liang Cheng, Qicai Chen
- BiologyPLoS ONE
- 24 July 2012
Bilateral collicular interaction mainly changes the ratio between excitation and inhibition during signal processing so as to sharpen the amplitude sensitivity of IC neurons, and may be also involved in acoustic-experience-dependent plasticity in the IC.
Recovery cycle of neurons in the inferior colliculus of the FM bat determined with varied pulse-echo duration and amplitude.
- Xin Wang, Feng Luo, P. Jen, Qicai Chen
- BiologyChinese journal of physiology
- 1 April 2010
Examination of the response of IC neurons with different BD and recovery cycle of the FM bat, Pipistrellus abramus, uses biologically relevant pulse-echo (P-E) pairs with varied duration and amplitude difference to examine how duration selectivity may affect a neuron's recovery cycle.
Echolocation Calls and Neurophysiological Correlations with Auditory Response Properties in the Inferior Colliculus of Pipistrellus abramus (Microchiroptera: Vespertilionidae)
- Feng Luo, Jie Ma, An-An Li, Feijian Wu, Qicai Chen, Shuyi Zhang
- Biology
- 1 September 2007
The study of echolocation calls and auditory response properties of IC neurons suggests that the IC of P. abramus can effectively process emitted pulses and echoes during hunting.

- N. Xu, Z. Fu, Qicai Chen
- Biology
- 17 September 2014
Three additional possible mechanisms were reviewed: neural inhibition and the intrinsic conductance property of offset neuron membranes, postulated to be located in the superior paraolivary nucleus of mice.

- BiologyZoological Studies
- 24 May 2015
Sexual dimorphism of multiple parameters of the echolocation pulses of the CF-FM bat, Hipposideros pratti, are examined to suggest that bats may potentially use this sexualDimorphism in echoline pulse parameters for social communication and species and sex identification.
Neural interactions in unilateral colliculus and between bilateral colliculi modulate auditory signal processing
- Huixian Mei, Liang Cheng, Qicai Chen
- BiologyFront. Neural Circuits
- 19 April 2013
In the auditory pathway, the inferior colliculus (IC) is a major center for temporal and spectral integration of auditory information and the neural interaction in one IC and between two ICs provide an adjustable and plastic modulation pattern for auditory signal processing.
