The clinical utility of auditory evoked potentials for validation of the pure tone audiogram in adult compensation claimants and medicolegal patients is examined. Large sample comparisons of evoked potential and conventional pure tone thresholds showed that the slow vertex response can estimate true hearing levels within 10 dB in almost all patients. In 1873 consecutive patients referred for compensation assessment for presumed industrial hearing loss, 281 (15%) had an average difference in hearing threshold between the ears of 15 dB at 1/2, 1, 2 and 4 kHz. An unrelated cause was found in 115 (6%). It was due to trauma in 37 (2%), unexplained in 32 (1.7%) and attributed to noise exposure in 97 (5.2%).(More)
Overestimation of hearing loss is a significant problem in the assessment of workers exposed to industrial noise. Audiometric and epidemiologic aspects of this problem are examined in 2,528 compensation claimants. Electric Response Audiometry (ERA) using the cortical Slow Vertex Response (SVR) is accurate and very useful for quantification of true hearing(More)
Cidofovir, a nucleoside analog antiviral agent, has been used with moderate success in the treatment of juvenile laryngeal papillomatosis (JLP) by direct intralesional injection. We report the first case where IV cidofovir was used successfully to treat a rare but lethal multicystic lung disease complicating JLP. A 35-year-old woman with a history of JLP(More)
In an attempt to clarify international epidemiologic trends, a review of the published literature pertaining to childhood hearing loss is presented. Inconsistencies of methodology and classification, which complicate the interpretation of data and make difficult the quantification of the influence of genuine population differences, are discussed. The aims of this research were to document changes in hearing and speech intelligibility in noise that occur with ageing, noise sensitivity, and progressive bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Five groups defined by age, clinical complaint and degree of hearing loss were tested. Each of 73 subjects participated in nine different procedures, including(More)
