Variegate porphyria (VP) is characterized by photocutaneous lesions and acute neuropsychiatric attacks. Decreased protoporphyrinogen oxidase activity results in accumulation of protoporphyrin (ogen) IX and coproporphyrin (ogen) III. During acute attacks delta-aminolevulinic acid and porphobilinogen also increase, suggesting that porphobilinogen deaminase(More)
Gibberellic acid induced growth in Avena (oat) stem segments within 35 minutes after hormone application. The total elongation elicited by gibberellic acid was greater than 15 times the control growth. The sensitivity of the segments to low concentrations of gibberellic acid (1 pmole) and the specificity of the segments to the gibberellin class of hormones(More)
We have studied the kinetics of the inhibition of mitochondrial protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) from liver and placenta of 3 mammalian species by the diphenyl ether herbicide acifluorfen (AF). AF competitively inhibited PPO from human liver and placenta, mouse liver and pig placenta with respect to its substrate protoporphyrinogen. In contrast, mixed-type(More)
Forensic consultations with psychotic inpatients frequently include issues of risk management, such as dangerousness and civil commitment. An important dimension of these consultations is the role of command hallucinations in producing an increased risk of aggressive behavior. In the present study, psychotic patients with command hallucinations (N = 27)(More)
Extensibility characteristics of Avena stem segments treated with gibberellic acid (GA) were investigated in living internodes using a microgrowth method and in partially extracted cell walls subjected to Instron extensometer analysis. Both techniques showed that treatment with GA greatly increases internodal plasticity, but has virtually no effect on(More)
Honey is a natural sweet substance that bees produce by transforming flower nectar or other sweet secretions of plants. It has widespread use in traditional medicine in various parts of the world. It has been reported to assist in building the entire central nervous system. The beneficial effects of honey have been attributed to the possible polyphenolic(More)
Gibberellins and auxins are the only hormones known that promote growth in oat (Avena sativa) stem segments, but when applied together, indoleacetic acid inhibits gibberellic acid-induced growth appreciably. This study shows that in addition to this inhibitory role, indoleacetic acid shortens the response time of the tissue to gibberellic acid.
The antigen-limiting nature of microtiter ELISAs predicts that antibodies of minor classes may be underestimated when the same specimen contains large amounts of IgG antibodies specific for the same antigen. Such competitive inhibition can be diagnosed from ELISA titration plots. A method is described to eliminate the negative effects of this competition on(More)
