PURPOSE Dupuytren's disease (DD) is a common fibrotic condition of the palmar fascia, leading to deposition of collagen-rich cords and finger contractions. The metzincin superfamily contains key enzymes in the turnover of collagen and other extracellular matrix macromolecules. A number of broad-spectrum matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors, used in cancer(More)
The Medical Research Council's Glomerulonephritis Registry was used to study clinicopathological correlations and renal survival in patients with IgA nephropathy reported between 1978 and 1985. IgA nephropathy was the histological diagnosis in 9.3 per cent of all renal biopsies reported to the registry during this period, and in 18.1 per cent of those with(More)
PURPOSE We have previously demonstrated that gene expression levels of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), related metalloproteinases "a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospontin motifs" (ADAMTSs), and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) differed when comparing palmar fascia from 19 patients with Dupuytren's disease (DD) with 19(More)
Research shows that prescription drug labels are often difficult for patients to understand, which contributes to medication errors and nonadherence. In this study, the authors developed and qualitatively evaluated an evidence-based bilingual prescription container label designed to improve understanding. The authors developed several prototypes in English(More)
The records of 7086 patients reported to the MRC Glomerulonephritis Registry between 1978 and 1990 were examined; 1368 patients were aged > 60 years at the time of biopsy. In 1978 12% of patients aged > 60 years underwent biopsy, whereas in 1990 30% of patients were aged > 60 years. The most common reasons for biopsy were nephrotic syndrome (31%), acute(More)
Seventy-one patients (93 implants) had a de la Caffinière prosthesis implanted between 1980 and 1989 and were reviewed and reported in 1997. We reviewed this series 10 years later. Similar outcome measures were used as in the original study, pinch and grip strength measured and validated outcome scores obtained (DASH and EQ-5D). Radiographic outcome was(More)
OBJECTIVES To assess whether allogeneic blood transfusion in the perioperative period is associated with changes in mortality or complication rates in patients undergoing surgical treatment for hip fracture (proximal femoral fracture). DESIGN Retrospective case-control series, all patients followed up for 1 year or until death. SETTING District General(More)
The outcomes of four pregnancies in a woman previously made hypothyroid by partial thyroidectomy for hyperthyroidism are reported. During the first two pregnancies she had no antithyroid therapy; the first resulted in late intrauterine death of a fetus with features compatible with fetal hyperthyroidism and the second in a child with skull deformities(More)
We report a case of an avulsion of part of the fibular head during a primary total knee replacement for osteoarthritis. Post-operatively the patient developed a foot-drop. However, there was no clinically demonstrable instability of the knee. The patient was managed conservatively, the foot-drop recovered completely and the knee remained clinically stable.(More)
