Increased atmospheric CO2 emissions are inducing changes in seawater carbon chemistry, lowering its pH, decreasing carbonate ion availability and reducing calcium carbonate saturation state. This phenomenon, known as ocean acidification, is happening at a faster rate in cold regions, i.e., polar and sub-polar waters. The larval development of Arbacia(More)
—We report on the characterization, active tuning, and modeling of the first mode resonance frequency of dielectric electroactive polymer (DEAP) membranes. Unlike other resonance frequency tuning techniques, the tuning procedure presented here requires no external actuators or variable elements. Compliant electrodes were sputtered or implanted on both sides(More)

Pathological findings in 20 cases of glioblastoma multiforme were correlated with clinical histories and computerized tomographic (CT) scans. This was done to define the neoplasm in three stages: before treatment, during remission, and during recurrence. The untreated lesions were markedly cellular neoplasms composed predominantly of small anaplastic cells.(More)
Meningeal hemangiopericytomas are rare but aggressive tumors. All eight patients in this series developed recurrences, three with distant metastases. In six patients a lytic destructive lesion of bone was evident. CT scans in three patients demonstrated diffusely enhancing lesions. No tumor calcification was present. In five of six patients angiography was(More)
Metrizamide computed tomography (CT) myelography is clinically useful in the detection of syringohydromyelia. The mechanism by which intrathecally injected metrizamide migrates into the intramedullary cavity is unknown, although reflux into the central canal of the cord via the obex has been postulated. Since intrathecally injected metrizamide has been(More)
We describe the multimedia teletutoring application jointly developed by EPFL and Eurecom in the context of the first 34 Mbits/s Trans-European ATM network interconnecting sites in France and Switzerland. This network was called the Broadband Exchange over Trans-European Links (BETEL). The aim of this paper is to describe the BETEL teletutoring platform and(More)
We report on the first ion-implanted dielectric electroactive polymer actuator that was successfully microfabricated and tested. Ion implantation is used to make the surface of the polymer locally conducting. Implanting the compliant electrodes solves the problem of how to microfabricate patterned electrodes having elasticity close to that of the insulating(More)
This paper reports the results of the first dynamic labeling experiment with regenerating spines of sea urchins Paracentrotus lividus using the stable isotope ²⁶Mg and NanoSIMS high-resolution isotopic imaging, which provide a direct information about the growth process. Growing spines were labeled twice (for 72 and 24 h, respectively) by increasing the(More)
