Bile acids repress the transcription of cytochrome P450 7A1 (CYP7A1), which catalyzes the rate-limiting step in bile acid biosynthesis. Although bile acids activate the farnesoid X receptor (FXR), the mechanism underlying bile acid-mediated repression of CYP7A1 remained unclear. We have used a potent, nonsteroidal FXR ligand to show that FXR induces(More)
We present the status of MUSIC, the MUltiwavelength Sub/millimeter Inductance Camera, a new instrument for the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. MUSIC is designed to have a 14', diffraction-limited field-of-view instrumented with 2304 detectors in 576 spatial pixels and four spectral bands at 0.87, 1.04, 1.33, and 1.98 mm. MUSIC will be used to study dusty(More)
A series of substituted phenethyl derivatives of 3-benzisothiazolylpiperazine incorporating potent D2 and 5-HT2A antagonist activity was investigated as an approach to a novel atypical antipsychotic agent. The in vitro profile of 8e from this series is a combination of D2 receptor affinity comparable to the typical antipsychotic agent haloperidol and a(More)
A variety of C17 amide-substituted 6-azaandrost-4-en-3-ones were prepared and tested versus human type 1 and 2 steroid 5 alpha-reductase (5AR) and human adrenal 3 beta-hydroxy-delta 5-steroid dehydrogenase/3-keto-delta 5-steroid isomerase (3BHSD) in order to optimize potency versus both isozymes of 5AR and selectivity versus 3BHSD. Two series of potent and(More)
We present results of a new deep 1.1 mm survey using Bolocam, a millimeterwavelength bolometer array camera designed for mapping large fields at fast scan rates, without chopping. A map, galaxy candidate list, and derived number counts are presented. This survey encompasses 324 arcmin to an rms noise level (filtered for point sources) of σ1.1mm ≃ 1.4 mJy(More)
6-Azaandrost-4-en-3-ones were synthesized and tested versus human type 1 and 2 steroid 5 alpha-reductase (5AR) and human adrenal 3 beta-hydroxy-delta 5-steroid dehydrogenase/3-keto-delta 5-steroid isomerase (3BHSD) to explore the structure-activity relationship of this novel series in order to optimize potency versus both isozymes of 5AR and selectivity(More)
Luminous water maser emission in the 616 − 523 line at 22 GHz has been detected from two dozen galaxies. In all cases the emission is confined to the nucleus and has been found only in AGN, in particular, in Type 2 Seyferts and LINERs. I argue that most of the observed megamaser sources are powered by X-ray irradiation of dense gas by the central engine.(More)

We will present the design and implementation, along with calculations and some measurements of the performance, of the room-temperature and cryogenic optics for MUSIC, a new (sub)millimeter camera we are developing for the Caltech Submm Observatory (CSO). The design consists of two focusing elements in addition to the CSO primary and secondary mirrors: a(More)
The MKID Camera project is a collaborative effort of Caltech, JPL, the University of Colorado, and UC Santa Barbara to develop a large-format, multi-color millimeter and submillimeter-wavelength camera for astronomy using microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs). These are superconducting, micro-resonators fabricated from thin aluminum and niobium(More)
