Radiological findings were analysed in 56 young patients with proven Schistosoma haematobium infection. In 31 patients (55%) changes were present in both the bladder and the ureters but in seven patients (13%) only ureteric changes were seen. Hypertrophy of the mucosa, mild stenosis, linear calcification, punctate calcification or 'ureteritis calcinosa' and(More)
Fifty-one post-menopausal women suffering from symptoms of oestrogen deficiency-derived atrophic vaginitis were treated intravaginally with two therapeutic regimens based on doses of 25 micrograms 17 beta-oestradiol (E2) in an open, controlled study. All the patients received treatment daily for 2 weeks by way of induction therapy. They were then randomly(More)
A versatile and conformationally preorganized universal linker molecule is reported here for efficient synthesis of phosphorothioate oligonucleotides. With respect to nucleoside loaded support, comparable yield and quality based on ion-pair LC-MS are obtained for both deoxy and 2'-O-methoxyethyl modified phosphorothioate oligonucleotides. No 3'-phosphate or(More)
The physiological relevance of the oral glucose tolerance test was evaluated in ten healthy nonobese subjects and nine subjects with slightly impaired glucose tolerance. In random order, all subjects received a 50 g oral glucose tolerance test or a standardized breakfast meal of equivalent carbohydrate content. Changes in plasma glucose, insulin, and(More)
Multiple 2'-O-methoxyethyl modified phosphorothioate oligonucleotides of 18-20-mer in length were synthesized at various scales using 4,5-dicyanoimidazole (DCI) as coupling activator. Extensive synthetic, analytical (using ion-pair LC-MS), and in vivo pharmacological, toxicological studies showed that oligonucleotides made with DCI and 1H-tetrazole are(More)
In an attempt to identify factors associated with stillbirths and those occuring in the 1st week of life, perinatal deaths in infants born in health facilities in Marondera Districts occurred during a 7 months period 1986 were recorded and analyzed. 66 such deaths out of a total of 1900 births, giving a perinatal mortality rate of 35/1000 total births.
