We investigated the relationship between trophic status and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) distribution in 19 Swedish lakes. We analyzed PCB in water, phytoplankton, zooplankton, fish and sediment during two sampling periods, in spring and summer. The mass of sigma PCB in the lake sediments was positively related to lake trophy, i.e. more PCBs were(More)
ZnO nanorods (NRs) with high surface area to volume ratio and biocompatibility is used as an efficient photosensitizer carrier system and at the same time providing intrinsic white light needed to achieve cancer cell necrosis. In this letter, ZnO nanorods used for the treatment of breast cancer cell (T47D) are presented. To adjust the sample for(More)
Microbial, algal, plant and animal cells have been immobilized, with preserved viability, by entrapment in various matrices according to a new bead polymerization technique. The cell polymer/monomer mixture is kept suspended in a hydrophobic phase such as soy, paraffin, or silicon oil, tri-n-butylphosphate, or dibutyphtalate, which is compatible with the(More)
W e have studied PCB concentration and domain (one to three congeners) distribution in water and fish along a gradient of a contaminated river system. The river was contaminated by a small lake that contains about 400 kg of PCB in the sediment. The PCB concentration in water in the outlet from the lake was 8.6 ng/L, which was 12 times higher than upstream.(More)
Thirteen patients with advanced multiple sclerosis and urge urinary incontinence were treated with desmopressin--a synthetic analogue of antidiuretic hormone--in a double-blind cross-over study. The micturition frequency decreased significantly (p less than 0.05). Less leakage was considered valuable for daily life. Peroral medication was favourable in(More)
Three methods were developed for preparing alginate gels containing cells that are stable in phosphate containing media. In Method I preformed alginate beads containing entrapped cells were treated with polyethyl eneimine followed by glutaraldehyde. In Method II alginate sol was treated with a carbodiimide and N-hydroxysuccinimide (to form active esters),(More)
The distribution of persistent pollutants in an eel population from a eutrophic lake of southern Scandinavia was examined. The origin of PCBs, DDT, DDE and lindane found in the fish was most likely the atmosphere. The most important factors for uptake of the chlorinated hydrocarbons was age (exposure time), growth rate and fat content. The life cycle of the(More)
Horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase was immobilized on glycerylpropyl-silica (10 micron, 1000-A pores) activated with 2,2,2-trifluoroethanesulfonyl chloride (tresyl chloride). The coupling and activity yield was almost 100%. The coenzyme-binding sites were equivalent and virtually unaffected by the immobilization process, as judged from Scatchard plots and(More)
beta-D-Galp-(1----3)-D-GalNAc (1) was synthesised from lactose and GalNAc on a mmolar scale by transgalactosylation using beta-D-galactosidase from bovine testes. The large proportions of unwanted oligosaccharides in the product mixture were removed by treatment with beta-D-galactosidase from E. coli, which left 1, monosaccharides, and a small proportion of(More)
