The current outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in Upper West Africa is the largest ever recorded. Molecular evidence suggests spread has been almost exclusively through human-to-human contact. Social factors are thus clearly important to understand the epidemic and ways in which it might be stopped, but these factors have so far been little analyzed. The(More)
A comparison of Tc-99m-labeled human serum albumin (HSA) and in vitro labeled red blood cells (RBC) was carried out in five subjects. The disappearance of radioactivity from the blood was more rapid for HSA (T 1/2, 281.6 minutes, range 202.1--318.3) than for RBC (T 1/2, 1719.8 minutes, range 767.6--5059.5). Urinary excretion was twice as great for HSA.(More)
Despite a widespread trend towards the adoption of increasingly participatory approaches to political decision-making in developing countries there is little or no evidence that these practices in fact return the benefits attributed to them. We present an empirical investigation into one specific worry—that participatory decision processes may be vulnerable(More)
Rituximab, a chimeric antibody that targets CD20(+) B cells, produces a 48% response rate in patients with refractory low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma. In this phase II trial, patients with low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma who had previously received no systemic therapy were treated with rituximab, 375 mg/m(2), administered by IV infusion for 4 consecutive(More)
Communication and social mobilisation strategies to raise awareness about Ebola virus disease and the risk factors for its transmission are central elements in the response to the current Ebola outbreak in west Africa. A principle underpinning these efforts is to change risky “behaviour” related to “traditional” practices and “misinformation”. Populations(More)
A simple kit for the preparation of 99mTc-labeled red blood cells in a closed sterile system is described. Whole blood (3-6 ml) is automatically drawn from the patient into a 10-ml Vacutainer tube, containing a freeze-dried stannous citrate formulation, with heparin as an anticoagulant. The kit provides consistent 97% yields in 20 min with small blood(More)
PURPOSE To evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of the novel chemotherapy combination that includes gemcitabine, carboplatin, and paclitaxel in the treatment of patients with carcinoma of unknown primary site. PATIENTS AND METHODS One hundred twenty patients were treated with the following regimen, administered every 21 days for a planned four courses:(More)
A detailed comparison was performed between the quality of cardiac images obtained using red blood cells labeled in vitro and in vivo. Both methods gave cardiac images of high quality. The in vitro method resulted in subjectively superior images, better intravascular retention of injected radioactivity, and a higher left-ventricle-to-background count ratio(More)
