OBJECTIVE To detect Anaplasma platys and Babesia canis vogeli infection, using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assays, in free-roaming dogs associated with eight Aboriginal communities in remote areas of Australia and to determine the impact of infection through the assessment of platelet numbers. PROCEDURES Blood samples from 215 dogs were screened(More)
Blood smears from 54 platypuses in southeastern Australia were examined by light microscopy. Protozoa were found in erythrocytes in 53 platypuses; all infections were sparse. A few parasites were found in leukocytes. Intraerythrocytic forms examined by electron microscopy contained vacuoles, micronemes, rhoptries and cytostomes with double unit membranes.(More)
OBJECTIVE To describe a case of meningoencephalitis caused by Balamuthia mandrillaris in an orang utan. DESIGN A pathological case report. ANIMAL A 20 years old male orang utan (Pongo pygmaeus). PROCEDURE The disease process was investigated by clinical pathology, necropsy, histopathology and immunofluorescence labelling. RESULTS The orang utan(More)
BACKGROUND Merino lambs are currently the subject of much research into the welfare aspects of mulesing and mulesing alternatives. OBJECTIVE Obtain haematology, biochemistry and acute phase protein reference intervals using modern methodologies for female Merino lambs. METHOD Blood was collected from 50, weaned, 9- to 16-week-old, female Merino lambs.(More)
1. The concentrations of creatine, phosphorylcreatine (PC), ATP, ADP, AMP and IMP have been measured in frog sartorius muscles at 20 degrees C during isometric tetani lasting from 0.5 to 12 sec. Each muscle was tetanized once only for the chosen duration. The muscles were poisoned with iodoacetic acid and nitrogen to prevent oxidative and glycolytic(More)
Antibodies raised against evolutionarily conserved intracytoplasmic peptide sequences of human T and B lymphocyte antigens and an antibody raised specifically against koala serum IgG were assessed for their capacity for immunoperoxidase staining of formalin fixed lymphoid tissues of koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus), common brushtail possums (Trichosurus(More)
A model of pulmonary cryptococcosis in immunocompetent rats was developed to better understand the virulence of Cryptococcus gattii. Six isolates were studied, representing four molecular genotypes (VGI-MATα, VGIIa-MATα, VGIIa-MAT a, VGIIb-MATα), obtained from Australia, Vancouver (Canada) and Colombia. These originated from human patients, a cat and the(More)
Sixty-two Thoroughbred horses aged between 1 and 7 years in training in Sydney had bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples collected for cytological examination. All horses, except the yearlings and those with a cough, had raced at the time of the examination and the trainers reported satisfactory performance. Free erythrocytes were found in 73% of samples and(More)
Leopard seal, Hydrurga leptonyx, and Weddell seal, Leptonychotes weddellii, occupy an upper trophic level within the Antarctic ecosystem and are useful indicator species in the Southern Ocean of trace element concentrations. Reference values for the concentration of 19 trace elements were determined in the serum and hair of leopard and Weddell seals sampled(More)
OBJECTIVE To determine the FIV status of Australian cats with lymphosarcoma and relate this to patient characteristics, tumour characteristics (tissue involvement, histological grade and immunophenotype), haematological and serum biochemical values and FeLV status of affected cats. DESIGN Prospective study of 101 client-owned cats with naturally-occurring(More)
