It is often difficult to assess small bowel recovery in adults with coeliac disease on a gluten-free diet (GFD). This prospective study compares changes in intestinal permeability with changes in intestinal biopsy at various intervals after commencing a GFD. Intestinal permeability was measured by lactulose/rhamnose absorption from 1 week to 24 months after… (More)
Intestinal pseudo-obstruction is a rare paraneoplastic manifestation of small-cell carcinoma of the lung. This report documents a further case associated with neuronal degeneration of enteric neural plexuses and a high serum titre of immunoglobulin G (IgG) type 1 anti-neuronal nuclear antibodies (ANNA-1).
A case, in which tubal conservation in an ectopic pregnancy resulted in the birth of a living infant, is described. It is hoped that tubal conservation in ectopic pregnancies, which was previously thought to be unwise, will be considered in future.
Logistic regression and Gaussian mixture model (GMM) classifiers have been trained to estimate the probability of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in patients based upon the concentrations of a panel of cardiac markers. The panel consists of two new markers, fatty acid binding protein (FABP) and glycogen phosphorylase BB (GPBB), in addition to the… (More)
Surface topographical detail in human buccal smears of normal and irradiated tissue have been studied with scanning electron microscopy. Cells collected by buccal smearing show patterns of microplicae and microvilli, although such detail is occasionally masked by mucus and to a lesser extent by debris and bacteria. Buccal smearing permits collection of… (More)
Misoprostol, a prostaglandin E1 analogue was administered orally to male volunteers in doses of 50, 100, 200 and 400 mcg and its effects on gastric secretion compared with those observed following placebo. All doses significantly inhibited basal acid secretion by up to 98% and also inhibited histamine-stimulated secretion during the first 60 minutes of… (More)
A new method of examining the scrotum by ultrasound with an automated water-path scanner is described. This method allows immobility of the scrotum in a more acceptable and painless way than in contact scanning methods. Panoramic scans of the entire scrotum and precision tomographic plane placement are advantages over conventional techniques. A description… (More)
