We report the results of clinical and polysomnographic investigations on 39 consecutive multiple system atrophy (MSA) patients. Twenty-seven patients (69%) reported nocturnal motor paroxysmal episodes related to dreams, suggesting the clinical diagnosis of REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). In 12 of them (44%), RBD preceded the clinical onset of the disease(More)
The authors assessed differences in both therapeutic and dyskinesia-matched concentrations of levodopa by kinetic-dynamic modeling in a large cohort of patients with Parkinson disease grouped by severity of symptoms. The goal was to provide a kinetic-dynamic approach to levodopa therapy monitoring to assist treating physicians in rationalizing patients'(More)
OBJECTIVES The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of and risk factors for hepatitis C or B virus (HCV or HBV) coinfection among HIV-infected pregnant women, and to investigate their immunological and virological characteristics and antiretroviral therapy use. METHODS Information on HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) positivity and HCV antibody(More)
The acute dose-response profile of a standard oral levodopa dose was followed, over a maximum 8-h period, in 13 patients with and 10 patients without motor fluctuations using a battery of motor quantitative tests (tapping and walking speed, and multiple choice reaction and movement times). Thirteen age-matched normal controls performed tapping and(More)
We performed a case-controlled study to investigate whether the FV Leiden mutation and the C > T677 polymorphism of the 5, 10 methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) are associated with the occurrence of preeclampsia in 96 otherwise healthy preeclamptic women and 129 parous women as controls. FV Leiden carriers were 10 (10.5%) in cases and 3 (2.3%) in(More)
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES To evaluate the association between unexplained or gestational-hypertension-associated fetal growth restriction (FGR) and factor V Leiden, prothrombin A20210 mutations, and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) TT 677 genotype. DESIGN AND METHODS Sixty-one women with a previous history of FGR and 93 parous women with(More)
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to describe the experience of pregnant and non-pregnant HIV-infected women regarding fertility and childbearing, with a view to inform policies and practices to improve reproductive outcome. METHODS A cross-sectional survey collected information on socio-demographic and basic reproductive characteristics of(More)
OBJECTIVES Few data exist for counseling and perinatal management of women after an antenatal diagnosis of early-onset fetal growth restriction. Yet, the consequences of preterm delivery and its attendant morbidity for both mother and baby are far reaching. The objective of this study was to describe perinatal morbidity and mortality following early-onset(More)
We investigated the relationship between levodopa plasma concentration and the tapping effect, after a standard oral levodopa test, by kinetic-dynamic modeling in 40 parkinsonian patients with stable or fluctuating response to levodopa, and found no difference in levodopa plasma pharmacokinetics between stable and fluctuating patients. Conversely, levodopa(More)
In four patients, calf muscular hypertrophy developed after the onset of sciatica. Hypertrophic muscles were weak and showed electromyographic signs of denervation. In all cases, calf muscle biopsy showed striking hypertrophy of type 1 and, especially, type 2 muscle fibers. This hypertrophy was associated with other signs indicating a neurogenic lesion.(More)
