A list of 39 quantitative morphological descriptors for different plant parts is elaborated and used to characterize 24 accessions of tree tomato from different origins corresponding to five cultivar groups: orange, orange pointed, purple, red, and red conical.

The results show that a wide diversity is present in each of the cultivar groups, indicate that Ecuador may be regarded as a center of accumulation of diversity for this crop, and confirm that AFLP and morphological characterization data are complementary.

The results provide insight on the consequences that climate change effects might exert on crops such as tree tomato, reveal that greenhouses can be a robust alternative for tree tomato production, and highlight the need to understand how different managements are linked to different solutions to fulfil the farmers’ demands.

A morphological and molecular characterization of tree tomato is made including a significant number of morphological traits and AFLPs markers, based on a broad diversity of accessions and cultivar groups, indicating that a wide variation exists and that it is possible to select materials with fruit characteristics more appropriate for the markets.
