Polyphasic taxonomy, a consensus approach to bacterial systematics.
In this review, the practice of polyphasic taxonomy is discussed for four groups of bacteria chosen for their relevance, complexity, or both: the genera Xanthomonas and Campylobacter, the lactic acid bacteria, and the family Comamonadaceae.
Advantages of multilocus sequence analysis for taxonomic studies: a case study using 10 housekeeping genes in the genus Ensifer (including former Sinorhizobium).
The MLSA data support the suggestion that Ensifer xinjiangensis is a later heterotypic synonym of Ensifer fredii and indicate that housekeeping gene sequencing is superior to DNA-DNA hybridization for the assessment of genetic relatedness between Ensifer species.
Ralstonia taiwanensis sp. nov., isolated from root nodules of Mimosa species and sputum of a cystic fibrosis patient.
A polyphasic taxonomic study was conducted to clarify the relationships of eight isolates from root nodules of Mimosa species and one isolate from sputum of a cystic fibrosis patient, which classified as a novel Ralstonia species, for which the name RAlstonia taiwanensis sp.
Ecological diversification in the Bacillus cereus Group.
How adaptation to novel environments by the modification of temperature tolerance limits has shaped historical patterns of global ecological diversification in the B. cereus Group is illustrated.
Synergistic Degradation of Linuron by a Bacterial Consortium and Isolation of a Single Linuron-Degrading Variovorax Strain
To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of a strain that degrades linuron further than the aromatic intermediates, and the rate of linuron degradation by strain WDL1 was lower than that for the consortium, but was clearly increased when W DL1 was coinoculated with each of the other four strains.
Cultivation of Denitrifying Bacteria: Optimization of Isolation Conditions and Diversity Study
A much more diverse denitrifying community was revealed than that previously described in cultivation-dependent research on activated sludge, both in number and in diversity.
Burkholderia tuberum sp. nov. and Burkholderia phymatum sp. nov., nodulate the roots of tropical legumes.
The taxonomic status of five root nodule isolates from tropical legumes was determined using a polyphasic taxonomic approach and two isolates were identified as novel Burkholderia species for which it is proposed the names Burk holderia tuberum sp.
Virgibacillus carmonensis sp. nov., Virgibacillus necropolis sp. nov. and Virgibacillus picturae sp. nov., three novel species isolated from deteriorated mural paintings, transfer of the species of
A group of 13 strains isolated from samples of biofilm formation on the mural paintings of the Servilia tomb and the Saint-Catherine chapel were subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study, including (GTG)5-PCR, 16S rDNA sequence analysis, DNA-DNA hybridizations, DNA base ratio determination and morphological and biochemical characterization.
Proposed minimal standards for describing new taxa of aerobic, endospore-forming bacteria.
These minimal standards are recommended as guidelines to assist authors in the preparation of descriptions for novel taxa to encourage broad polyphasic characterization and the construction of descriptions that are practically useful in routine diagnostic laboratories.
