Classification of hepatitis C virus into six major genotypes and a series of subtypes by phylogenetic analysis of the NS-5 region.
A new nomenclature for HCV variants is proposed in this communication that reflects the two-tiered nature of sequence differences between different viral isolates and describes criteria that would enable new variants to be assigned within the classification as they are discovered.
Consensus proposals for a unified system of nomenclature of hepatitis C virus genotypes
These proposals provide the framework by which the HCV databases store and provide access to data on HCV, which will internationally coordinate the assignment of new genotypes and subtypes in the future.

This work proposes a taxonomic scheme in which the family Hepeviridae is divided into the genera Orthohepevirus (all mammalian and avian hepatitis E virus (HEV) isolates) and PiscihepeVirus (cutthroat trout virus), and proposals are made for the designation of genotypes within the human and rat HEVs.
