Cocaine-induced suppression of saccharin intake: a model of drug-induced devaluation of natural rewards.

The results showed that rats avoided intake of saccharin after sacchar in-cocaine pairings and that greater avoidance of the gustatory cue was associated with greater cocaine self-administration and may be useful as a model of cue-induced craving and drug-induced devaluation of natural rewards.

The results demonstrate that the disruption of CTA in lesioned rats cannot be ascribed to an inability to process either gustatory or visceral afferent information per se and suggest that PBN-lesioned rats are unable to form a specific association between gustatory and visceral cues.
