The level of accumulation of berberine in the cells was increased strongly in the presence of 5'-MHC, indicating that this plant compound effectively disabled the bacterial resistance mechanism against the berberines antimicrobial.

A new method of bioactivity-directed fractionation, based on multidrug resistant pump (MDR) inhibition in Staphylococcus aureus, was demonstrated, which resulted in the isolation, from berberine-containing Berberis species, of two compounds that form potent synergistic couples with a subinhibitory concentration of berberines.

The investigations reported here focus on an in‐depth characterization of the secondary metabolite profile of Sanguisorba officinalis flowers and the most prominent ursane‐type triterpenoid from SanguISorba and its corresponding aglycone isomers were detected and assigned based on their characteristic fragmentation patterns.
