The level of accumulation of berberine in the cells was increased strongly in the presence of 5'-MHC, indicating that this plant compound effectively disabled the bacterial resistance mechanism against the berberines antimicrobial.

5'-Methoxyhydnocarpin-D and pheophorbide A: Berberis species components that potentiate berberine growth inhibition of resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
- F. Stermitz, J. Tawara-Matsuda, P. Lorenz, P. Mueller, L. Zenewicz, K. Lewis
- BiologyJournal of Natural Products
- 20 July 2000
A new method of bioactivity-directed fractionation, based on multidrug resistant pump (MDR) inhibition in Staphylococcus aureus, was demonstrated, which resulted in the isolation, from berberine-containing Berberis species, of two compounds that form potent synergistic couples with a subinhibitory concentration of berberines.

- P. Lorenz, P. Jensen, W. Fenical
- Chemistry
- 1 May 1998
Abstract Mactanamide (1), a new diketopiperazine containing the uncommon amino acid D-2,6-dihydroxyphenylalanine, has been isolated from the mycelium of an undescribed marine fungus of the genus…
Isolation and synthesis of an α-malamic acid derivative from Justicia ghiesbreghtiana
- L. Ismail, P. Lorenz, F. Stermitz
- Chemistry
- 31 July 1998
A polar extract of leaves of Justicia ghiesbreghtiana yielded N-(2-hydroxy-4,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-(S)-α-malamic acid, 1. Incomplete spectral analysis yielded a hypothetical structure, which was then…
Characterization of Secondary Metabolites in Flowers of Sanguisorba officinalis L. by HPLC‐DAD‐MSn and GC/MS
- Marek Bunse, P. Lorenz, F. Stintzing, Dietmar Kammerer
- Chemistry, MedicineChemistry and Biodiversity
- 25 February 2020
The investigations reported here focus on an in‐depth characterization of the secondary metabolite profile of Sanguisorba officinalis flowers and the most prominent ursane‐type triterpenoid from SanguISorba and its corresponding aglycone isomers were detected and assigned based on their characteristic fragmentation patterns.
