Phylogeny and classification of Rhagionidae, with implications for Tabanomorpha (Diptera: Brachycera)
- P. Kerr
- Biology
- 31 August 2010
This paper updates current knowledge of Rhagionidae and related taxa within the infraorder Tabanomorpha. An estimate of phylogeny for the group is presented, based on 127 morphological characters for…
Remarkable fly (Diptera) diversity in a patch of Costa Rican cloud forest: Why inventory is a vital science.
- A. Borkent, B. Brown, M. Zumbado
- Environmental Science, BiologyZootaxa

The number of species of Diptera in tropical regions has been severely underestimated and the actual number may surpass the number ofspecies of Coleoptera.
New Azana species from Western North America (Diptera: Mycetophilidae)
- P. Kerr
- Biology
- 12 March 2010
Two new species of fungus gnats (Diptera: Mycetophilidae), Azana malinamoena and Azana frizzelli, spp. nov., are described and figured from California. These species represent the first records of…
Comprehensive inventory of true flies (Diptera) at a tropical site
- B. Brown, A. Borkent, M. Zumbado
- Environmental ScienceCommunications Biology
- 22 March 2018
The intensive inventory of a four-hectare tropical cloud forest in Costa Rica for one year yielded 4332 species of Diptera, providing the first verifiable basis for diversity of a major group of insects at a single site in the tropics.

Molecular Identification of the Light Brown Apple Moth (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in California Using a Polymerase Chain Reaction Assay of the Internal Transcribed Spacer 2 Locus
- N. Barr, Lisa Ledezma, T. Gilligan
- BiologyJournal of Economic Entomology
- 1 December 2009
ABSTRACT
A molecular protocol using a hemi-nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the internal transcribed spacer region 2 (ITS2) is reported for the diagnosis of light brown apple moth,…
Six new species of Acomoptera from North America (Diptera, Mycetophilidae)
- P. Kerr
- BiologyZooKeys
- 14 October 2011
These novel species forms have implications for the concept of Acomoptera that in turn, may impact the understanding of its generic relationships and the evolution and composition of Gnoristinae and Sciophilinae.

F fungus gnats, collected in Fairbanks, Alaska, display two freezing events when experimentally cooled and different rates of survival after each event, and it is suggested that freezing is initially restricted to one body compartment by regional dehydration in the head/thorax that prevents inoculative freezing.
Genetic Diversity of Bactrocera dorsalis (Diptera: Tephritidae) on the Hawaiian Islands: Implications for an Introduction Pathway into California
- N. Barr, Lisa Ledezma, S. Gaimari
- BiologyJournal of Economic Entomology
- 1 October 2014
Comparison of the Hawaiian data set to DNA sequences of 165 flies from outbreaks in California indicates that a single-source introduction pathway of Hawaiian origin cannot explain many of the flies in California, and suggests that California experienced multiple, independent introductions from different sources.
