Condition, prolonged swimming performance and muscle metabolic capacities of cod Gadus morhua
TLDR
It is indicated that cod use both glycolytic and oxidative capacities to support endurance swimming, and swimming endurance is linked with the metabolic capacities of red and white muscle.
Tilting behaviour of the Atlantic mackerel, Scomber scombrus, at low swimming speeds
TLDR
Negatively-buoyant Atlantic mackerel, Scomber scombrus L., (fork length 30–39 cm) tilt their bodies with the head up while swimming at speeds below 0.8 body length per second, which is considered to allow the fish to maintain a chosen swimming depth while its body creates lift by acting as a hydrofoil.
The muscle twitch and the maximum swimming speed of giant bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus L.
TLDR
Sustained swimming of bluefin tuna was analysed from video recordings made of a captive patrolling fish school, finding that muscle contraction time increased from the shortest just behind the head to the longest at the tail peduncle and maximum swimming speed was estimated by measuring twitch contraction of the anaerobic swimming muscle in pithed fish 5 min after death.
Swimming speeds of marine fish in relation to fishing gears
TLDR
Recent findings of swimming performance in marine fishes are summarized and a change in swimming ability due to biological and environmental conditions and how achange in trawl operation can influence the size selectivity of a trawl are discussed.
Burst swimming speeds of mackerel, Scomber scombrus L
TLDR
Burst swimming speeds were measured in Mackerel by filming newly caught fish, first released into a large shore-sited tank, using a high-speed cine camera and real time TV camera, suggesting that the mackerel is swimming close to its physiological limit.
Selectivity of large mesh trawl codends in the Gulf of Maine: I. Comparison of square and diamond mesh

  • 2007
Abstract Selectivity properties of five codend types were evaluated using the covered codend method. The codends tested were 152, 165 and 178 mm diamond mesh codends, and 165 and 178 mm square mesh

Abstract Swimming behaviour of winter flounder (Pleuronectes americanus) was recorded near baited hooks on natural fishing grounds using an underwater video camera. Winter flounder were observed to
Factors affecting the swimming endurance and catchability of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua)
TLDR
The swimming endurance of Atlantic cod, native to the cold waters off the east coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, was investigated under laboratory conditions and the hazard, or risk of exhaustion, was found to increase rapidly with increasing swimming speed.
