A preliminary overview of skin and skeletal diseases and traumata in small cetaceans from South American waters
This study demonstrates the utility of a continent-wide analysis to discern epizootiological trends more readily than any local study could provide and underscores the need for focussed research on the effects of human activities on the spread of diseases in cetaceans, particularly in near-shore populations that utilize highly degraded coastal habitats.
Applying the phylogeographic concept to identify franciscana dolphin stocks: implications to meet management objectives
Although in some cases the evidence for such sub-division into four stocks is weak due to lack of data, the use of the proposed classification into four FMAs is recommended to warrant effective management on a local scale.
Mitochondrial DNA diversity of the Southwestern Atlantic humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) breeding area off Brazil, and the potential connections to Antarctic feeding areas
It is suggested that the main feeding area of the Southern Hemisphere humpback whale population is likely to be located near the South Georgia/South Sandwich Islands area and not in the Antarctic Peninsula.
EFFECTS OF FISHING BYCATCH AND THE CONSERVATION STATUS OF THE FRANCISCANA DOLPHIN, PONTOPORIA BLAINVILLEI
FRANCISCANA’S LIFE HISTORY Distribution and habitat The franciscana, Pontoporia blainvillei, is endemic to the coastal waters of the Southwest Atlantic Ocean, occurring from Itaúnas (18o25 ́S – 30o42…
A first estimate of franciscana (Pontoporia blainvillei) abundance off southern Brazil
A first abundance estimate for the coastal waters of Rio Grande do Sul State (southern Brazil) and Uruguay is presented and further surveys covering a larger area are recommended in order to obtain more reliable abundance estimates for the stock.
Habitat use patterns of franciscana dolphins (Pontoporia blainvillei) off southern Brazil in relation to water depth

The patterns of habitat use by the franciscana dolphins (Pontoporia blainvillei) along its distribution are poorly known. This study investigates the patterns of habitat use with respect to depth for…
Evidence of feeding by the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) in mid-latitude waters of the western South Atlantic
The first evidence of recent feeding in southern Brazil is document, demonstrating that the productive waters of the southern and south-eastern Brazilian coast may occasionally be used by humpback whales as an opportunistic feeding zone, and adds the shrimp A. americanus as a new prey species for the humpback whale.
Levels of Cadmium, Mercury, and Lead in Magellanic Penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) Stranded on the Brazilian Coast
- C. Vega, S. Siciliano, P. H. Ott
- Environmental ScienceArchives of environmental contamination and…
- 1 February 2010
Samples of liver and breast muscles of first-year Magellanic penguins from two different areas on the Brazilian coast showed a significant difference between the two regions, and the geometric mean of the concentrations was higher in the specimens from Rio de Janeiro than in those from Rio Grande do Sul.
Fraser's dolphin ( Lagenodelphis hosei Fraser, 1956) in southern Brazil
- I. Moreno, D. Danilewicz, M. Borges-Martins, P. H. Ott, G. Caon, L. Oliveira
- Environmental Science, Biology
- 30 June 2003
The Fraser's dolphin strandings in Rio Grande do Sul were not isolated events, and several other were recorded for the Brazilian, Uruguayan and Argentinean coast in the same and subsequent years, which may represent a complex phenomenon involving several causes, such as transient oceanographic events, diseases and other variables.
REPORT OF THE WORKING GROUP ON FISHERY INTERACTIONS
Mortality of franciscana in fishing operations has been observed for almost sixty years. Reports on by-catch in shark gillnet fisheries off Uruguay date back to the early forties (Van Erp, 1969).…
