Hepatitis E Virus Epidemiology in Industrialized Countries
- P. Clemente-Casares, S. Piña, R. Girones
- BiologyEmerging Infectious Diseases
- 1 April 2003
The results suggest that HEV may be more prevalent than previously considered in industrialized countries and that variants of the virus circulate simultaneously in one region.
Quantification and Stability of Human Adenoviruses and Polyomavirus JCPyV in Wastewater Matrices
- S. Bofill-Mas, N. Albińana-Giménez, R. Girones
- Environmental ScienceApplied and Environmental Microbiology
- 6 October 2006
Results confirm the suitability of both viruses as indicators of human fecal viral pollution and showed high stability in urban sewage.
Comparison of methods for concentrating human adenoviruses, polyomavirus JC and noroviruses in source waters and drinking water using quantitative PCR.

- Environmental ScienceEnvironmental Science and Technology
- 1 December 2006
Quantification of JCPyV and HAdV using quantitative real-time PCR (QPCR) may be useful for evaluating virus removal efficiency in water treatment plants and as an index of the virological quality of water and of the potential presence of human viruses.
Detection of Bovine and Porcine Adenoviruses for Tracing the Source of Fecal Contamination
- C. Maluquer de Motes, P. Clemente-Casares, A. Hundesa, Margarita Martín, R. Girones
- Medicine, BiologyApplied and Environmental Microbiology
- 1 March 2004
The results indicate the importance of further studies to evaluate the usefulness of these tests to trace the source of fecal contamination in water and food and for environmental studies.
Genetic analysis of hepatitis A virus strains recovered from the environment and from patients with acute hepatitis.
- S. Piña, M. Buti, R. Jardí, P. Clemente-Casares, J. Jofre, R. Gironés
- BiologyJournal of General Virology
- 1 December 2001
The molecular epidemiology of hepatitis A virus (HAV) was studied by analysing HAV strains recovered from environmental water samples over a 7 year period and strains recovery from patients with acute hepatitis over a 5 year period, which showed a 95% prevalence of genotype I.
Development and application of a one-step low cost procedure to concentrate viruses from seawater samples.

Putative neutralization epitopes and broad cross-genotype neutralization of Hepatitis E virus confirmed by a quantitative cell-culture assay.
- S. Emerson, P. Clemente-Casares, Nasser Moiduddin, V. Arankalle, U. Torian, R. Purcell
- BiologyJournal of General Virology
- 1 March 2006
Anti-HEV from vaccinated or infected rhesus monkeys neutralized the virus, as did mAbs that recognized epitopes on the C terminus of a recombinant vaccine protein, which was broadly cross-reactive.
Potential Transmission of Human Polyomaviruses through the Gastrointestinal Tract after Exposure to Virions or Viral DNA
- S. Bofill-Mas, M. Formiga-Cruz, P. Clemente-Casares, F. Calafell, R. Girones
- Environmental ScienceJournal of Virology
- 1 November 2001
Data indicate that the ingestion of contaminated water or food could represent a possible portal of entrance of these viruses or polyomavirus DNA into the human population.
Hepatitis E virus genotype 3 and sporadically also genotype 1 circulate in the population of Catalonia, Spain.
- P. Clemente-Casares, J. Rodriguez-Manzano, R. Girones
- BiologyJournal of Water and Health
- 1 December 2009
The results proved the presence of HEV strains belonging to genotypes 3 and also sporadically to genotype 1 in urban sewage and biosolids, showing the simultaneous circulation of diverse HEV strain in the human population of the studied area.
