This model includes adaptive neural processing preceding a rivalry resolution stage with cross-inhibition, adaptation, and an interaction of the adaptation levels with a neural baseline that suggests that top-down attentional control over bistable stimuli interacts with low-level mechanisms at early levels of sensory processing before perceptual conflicts are resolved and perceptual choices are made.

This work investigates how audiovisual context affects perceived event duration with experiments in which observers reported which of two stimuli they perceived as longer, and shows that auditory influences on subjective visual durations occur only when the temporal characteristics of the stimuli promote perceptual grouping.
