We analyze the performance of Japanese opentype stock mutual funds for the 1981–1992 period. The results show that, regardless of the performance measures and benchmarks employed, most of the Japanese mutual funds underperform the benchmarks by between 3.6% and 10.8% per annum. These funds tend to invest more in large stocks with low book-to-market ratios.(More)
OBJECTIVE The heparin-protamine titration method that uses the Hepcon hemostasis management system (Medtronic HemoTec Inc, Englewood, Colo) reduced blood loss in cardiac surgery in previous reports, but the mechanism is not fully understood. This study tests the hypothesis that reduced protamine administration preserves platelet function in human cardiac(More)
Although an increasing incidence of upper extremity venous thrombosis (U/E-DVT) has been reported, a relative paucity of information regarding the etiologic categories, precipitating causes, and proper management for this disorder is available. To settle on a strategy for the management of U/E-DVT, retrospective analyses were performed using records from(More)
This paper proposes a method for identifying an object which contains an accelerometer out of many moving objects in the view of a stationary camera using motion data obtained by the camera and the accelerometer. The camera and the accelerometer are assumed to be connected with a network but not synchronized. In order to evaluate the similarity of the(More)
Recently small satellites start playing important roles in earth observation missions. It, however, is true that small satellites have drawbacks of sensor resolutions and down link data rate. As a solution to the latter drawback, we have developed novel communications system for 320Mbps down link with 16QAM for small satellites with 50kg class. We developed(More)
A case of traumatic disruption and dissection of the bilateral vertebral arteries and internal carotid arteries is reported. Ligation of bilateral arteries was performed for active bleeding. Anticoagulant therapy was selected to prevent thromboembolism and thrombotic occlusion of the dissected internal carotid arteries.
BACKGROUND Neutrophil is a major focus in efforts to ameliorate the systemic inflammatory response associated with cardiopulmonary bypass. Neutrophil elastase is a powerful proteolytic enzyme, and plays a pivotal role in the development of the inflammatory response. This study assesses the inhibitory effects of sivelestat, a highly specific neutrophil(More)
Aneurysm formation after aortic coarctation repair is not a rare complication of post-coarctation of aorta repair. We describe the case of a 43-year-old woman who had undergone repair of an isolated interruption of the aortic arch 30 years earlier, who came to our hospital with progressive chest pain, cough and dyspnea. A giant aortic aneurysm was revealed(More)
OBJECTIVES We sought to clarify the role of platelets in the pathogenesis of abnormal coagulation in patients with cyanotic congenital heart disease (CCHD) with polycythemia; we evaluated the production of platelet microparticles (MPs), platelet degranulation and aggregation response, as well as the correlations of these variables with polycythemia. (More)
We have identified a patient with IgD lambda-type multiple myeloma who was characterized by a severe bleeding tendency, especially after puncture of arterial vessels. Both the bleeding time (>25 min) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) were prolonged. To clarify the underlying pathogenesis, we purified the APTT-prolonging activity from the(More)
