Since the beginning of this century, Goji berries and juice are being sold as health food products in western countries and praised in advertisements and in the media for well-being and as an anti-aging remedy. The popularity of Goji products has rapidly grown over the last years thanks to efficient marketing strategies. Goji is a relatively new name given(More)
Three known phloroglucinols (japonicine A, uliginosin A and isouliginosin B) and a new phloroglucinol (hyperbrasiol A) have been isolated from a petrol extract of the leaves and flowers of Hypericum brasiliense. Their structures were established by spectroscopic methods (UV, DCI-MS, 1H and 13CNMR, including SINEPT, HMBC, HSQC, DQFCOSY experiments). The(More)
A new angucyclinone antibiotic, frigocyclinone, was isolated from Streptomyces griseus strain NTK 97, consisting of a tetrangomycin moiety attached through a C-glycosidic linkage with the aminodeoxysugar ossamine. Frigocyclinone showed antibacterial activities against Gram-positive bacteria.
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Swiss Alps have an ancestral tradition with regard to the use of wild plants as medicines and food. However, this knowledge is falling into oblivion, and is nowadays confined to village areas. Aim of the study was to identify wild edible plants used today and during the last two centuries by the alpine population of Valais(More)
The composition of noni (Morinda citrifolia) products has been investigated. TLC profiles of several commercial juices and capsules were compared. 3-Methyl-1,3-butanediol was identified as a typical marker in noni juices. The presence of sorbic acid (E200) was detected in one juice declared as additive free. Quantitative data have been obtained by HPLC-MS.(More)
A set of 600 actinomycetes strains which were isolated from marine sediments from various sites in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans were screened for the production of bioactive secondary metabolites. Marine streptomycete strains were found to be producers of well known chemically diverse antibiotics isolated from terrestrial streptomycetes, as in the case(More)
Products derived from Noni fruit (Morinda citrifolia) have been commercialised in the USA since the 1990s and are increasingly distributed all over the world. A large number of beneficial effects have been claimed for Noni. Fruit juice of Noni has been approved as a Novel Food by the European Commission in 2003. This article reviews current knowledge on the(More)
A new bicyclic 19-peptide, BI-32169, has been isolated from the culture broth of Streptomyces sp. (DSM 14996). Its structure has been established by amino acid analysis, mass spectrometry, and 2D NMR analysis. BI-32169 consists exclusively of protein amino acids and is cyclized from the side chain of Asp(9) to the N-terminus of Gly(1). One disulfide bond(More)
A new carbazole alkaloid, named clausine Z, has been isolated from the stems and leaves of Clausena excavata Burm. (Rutaceae). Its structure was established by spectroscopic methods. The compound exhibits inhibitory activity against cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5) and shows protective effects on cerebellar granule neurons in vitro.
