- M. Wu, O. Solgaard, J. Ford
- PhysicsJournal of Lightwave Technology
- 1 December 2006
The intensive investment in optical microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) in the last decade has led to many successful components that satisfy the requirements of lightwave communication networks.…
Deformable grating optical modulator.
- O. Solgaard, F. S. Sandejas, D. Bloom
- PhysicsOptics Letters
- 1 May 1992
A new type of lightmodulator, the deformable grating modulator, based on electrically controlling the amplitude of a micromachined phase grating is described, which allows the use of structures with high mechanical resonance frequencies.
In vivo brain imaging using a portable 2.9 g two-photon microscope based on a microelectromechanical systems scanning mirror.
- W. Piyawattanametha, E. Cocker, M. Schnitzer
- Physics, BiologyOptics Letters
- 1 August 2009
A two-photon microscope that is based on a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) laser-scanning mirror is presented and imaged neocortical microvasculature and tracked the flow of erythrocytes in live mice.
Matrix optimization on universal unitary photonic devices
- Sunil Pai, Ben Bartlett, O. Solgaard, D. Miller
- Computer SciencePhysical Review Applied
- 2 August 2018
This work simulates the gradient-based optimization of random unitary matrices on universal photonic devices composed of imperfect tunable interferometers and explores mesh architecture improvements such as adding extra tunable beamsplitters or permuting waveguide layers to further improve the training speed and scalability of these devices.
Scaling internet routers using optics
- I. Keslassy, Shang-Tse Chuang, N. McKeown
- Computer ScienceConference on Applications, Technologies…
- 25 August 2003
This paper considers how optics can be used to scale capacity and reduce power in a router, and describes two different implementations based on technology available within the next three years.

- K. Crozier, V. Lousse, O. Kilic, Sora Kim, S. Fan, O. Solgaard
- Physics
- 30 March 2006
Air-bridged photonic crystal slabs are demonstrated at visible and near-infrared wavelengths. We present experimental and theoretical studies of the transmission spectra of air-bridged photonic…
Resonant harmonic response in tapping-mode atomic force microscopy
- O. Sahin, C. Quate, O. Solgaard, A. Atalar
- Engineering, Physics
- 28 April 2004
Higher harmonics in tapping-mode atomic force microscopy offers the potential for imaging and sensing material properties at the nanoscale. The signal level at a given harmonic of the fundamental…
An atomic force microscope tip designed to measure time-varying nanomechanical forces
- O. Sahin, S. Magonov, C. Su, C. Quate, O. Solgaard
- PhysicsNature Nanotechnology
- 29 July 2007
A specially designed cantilever tip is created that allows these interaction forces to be measured with good (sub-microsecond) temporal resolution and material properties to be determined and mapped in detail with nanoscale spatial resolution.
