Age- and sex-based variation in helminth infection of helmeted guineafowl (Numida meleagris) with comments on Swainson's spurfowl (Pternistis swainsonii) and Orange River francolin (Scleroptila…
Female guineafowl had significantly higher intensities of infection than males, especially concerning M. gallinarum, S. dentigera and N. numida and the nematode Gongylonema congolense, and the recovery of the cestode Retinometra sp.

The protection induced by free calreticulin was associated with low levels of serum IgE and moderate lung eosinophilia whilst administration of cal reticulin‐loaded microparticles wasassociated with high levels of SeraE and higher lung eOSinophil activity, suggesting that the classical Th2 phenotype may not always be associated with protective immunity, albeit in experimental necatoriasis.

A new Tetrameres species is proposed for Swainson's spurfowl, which can be differentiated from its congeners by a combination of the following characters of males: two rows of body spines, a single spicule which is 1152–1392 μm long, and eight pairs of caudal spines arranged in two ventral and two lateral rows of four spines each.

The results suggest that helminth communities of spurfowl and guineafowl are associated with a complex interplay of numerous factors, including host characteristics, parasite traits and environmental conditions.
